Members GotaFish Posted January 3, 2021 Members Posted January 3, 2021 Looking for a small outboard jet to propel my Shawnee up rivers like the Niangua. Not looking for a big motor, just need something that will push me up stream at a couple of miles per hour. Will take it slow so as to not punch holes in the boat, but would like to have the flexibility to motor upstream. Is it possible to find a reliable jet as small as a 9.9 HP
fishinwrench Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 Don't make the mistake of underpowering your boat. While the Niangua may not be considered a "dangerous river", it CAN BE. Getting halfway through a tight spot, picking up a few rocks and running out of @$$ can get you into trouble real quick. Having some extra forward momentum is needed more often than you might think. More HP will save your boat more often than it will hurt it. If you just want to "ease your way upstream" then use a little prop motor and a tow rope. This gutless POS right here got me into more trouble than I care to admit. dan hufferd, Seth, cheesemaster and 1 other 4
Members GotaFish Posted January 4, 2021 Author Members Posted January 4, 2021 Wrench, Thanks for the advice, so what size jet engine would you recommend for a 20'6" Shawnee? I won't have much in the boat with me when I am motoring up and I don't need to go up the river 100 MPH, just trying to motor upstream a reasonable distance and then float my way back down.
Bushbeater Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 I've got a Mercury Jet 20 on my 16' Jon, it handles the Niangua well. My buddy Greasy has one on his 20' Trout boat, it moves along just fine.
Members GotaFish Posted January 4, 2021 Author Members Posted January 4, 2021 Logperch, Since you already have a motor and fish the Niangua, maybe I should just go fishing with you 😄 What sections of the river do you typically fish?
STLbassbuster Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 I’d want at least a 30hp jet on your Shawnee. Better to have the hp for when you truly need it.

What's the boat rated for? That's what you want.
Gavin Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 40 jet is kinda the standard jet boat jon entry level rig. A Few can fish from them well. Most just want to motor boat.

gotmuddy Posted January 4, 2021 Posted January 4, 2021 What width and length is your shawnee? If its a 20x48" a 25/20 will be fine. One thing to keep in mind is if this is the original style shawnee it has quite a bit of rocker built into it and the boat will NEVER go fast. I had a similarly built JS 42" wide bottom many years ago and I wanted more speed so I put a 25hp(prop) on in place of my 9.9. I netted 2mph gained and way worse fuel economy. snagged in outlet 3 and Daryk Campbell Sr 2 everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
