Devan S. Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 I am seeing all sorts of news online about high demand on electric systems and electrical co-ops asking users to be selective about power usage and to cut down. Natural gas limitations from CU in Springfield related to freezing wells in OK, TX, ect. Switched on the propane peak shaving air systems for the first time ever. Seems like a lot is being made about this but I have to think this isn't the first time its ever gotten this cold for this long. I'm a pup by most regards but I remember in the 90s having to ride around in the winter and chop ice with my dad for the cattle. Something I haven't had to do in 7+ years. I actually still have a 2ft diameter hole in my spring fed pond the cattle have managed to keep open themselves. Don't get me wrong, I was out this morning pre-daylight checking ponds and feeding cows spent most of the day yesterday prepping outside, I know its cold and the wind is brutal but is it really that cold out or has the last 10 years or so of "mild" winters really made us forget about winter?
Quillback Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 It is cold - I spent part of my life living in Massachusetts and even there you don't get too many days below zero in the winter. It's also unusual to get snow like this when it is so cold, usually it's a high pressure system, blue skies and sunny but colder than heck.
moguy1973 Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 I took the dog out and then got the snow blower out to prep it for the snows later today. Saw it needed some gas so walked out to the shed to get the gas can. The wind had my nose running and my eyes watering. The snot and tears were freezing on my face. That’s when you know it’s cold. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

I used the leaf blower yesterday on my driveway.😂 I wear a fleece mask this time of year.

More power to you for taking care of your livestock. I sure am glad that I don’t have to chop ice on ponds any more. December, January and February were the three months that I never liked owning cows. We sold off all of the cattle and got rid of some of the farms.
oneshot Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 I went hunting with friends for several years on Valentines Day weekend and last time had over a foot of snow. We could count on some snow every time. Yes this was in Missouri. oneshot
Ketchup Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Not really. These blasts are pretty typical this time of the year for alot of states, even here in hickville. Stick around, it will soon change. Funny, we were driving to my daughters yesterday when i looked over at the better half and said, you know, I don’t miss getting out there and feeding this winter. She just laughed. Nice not to be forced out to check those cows. TinBoats BassClub. An aluminum only bass club. If interested in info send me a PM.

Terrierman Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Seems like it's been quite a while since we've had a cold snap that lasted as long as this one definitely is.

As we drove, she said “we need to build a barn with heat so the cows don’t get cold anymore”. She knows what my rolled eyes mean. fishinwrench 1 TinBoats BassClub. An aluminum only bass club.
