Dutch Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I couldn’t find anything even close to this. Last summer my lawn was full of crabgrass. I tried some different killers none of which worked so I decided to use a preventer. All I could find was a combination of stuff from Pennington. I was supposed to control lots of stuff as well as prevent crabgrass from germinating. So far the fertilizer is working and making me have to mow but it hasn’t done anything to the weeds so I’m wondering if it will do anything to the crabgrass or did I buy an expensive bag of false advertising with some fertilizer. Anyone with experience in this area?
Gumboot Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 My local city golf course had crabgrass bad, one day we played and the crabgrass was all turning white and dying and rest of grass was ok. I asked one of the maintenance guys what they used. Generic Tenacity. I haven't tried it but it sure smoked those weeds. https://www.domyown.com/tenacity-herbicide-p-1877.html Not cheap. Ok for fescue, rye grass, bluegrass. Not recommended for bermuda or St Augustine.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 Crabgrass preventer will only prevent crabgrass from germinating not kill crabgrass. First application goes down when the forsythia start turning yellow. If it rains heavily after you apply it it can run right off. If the crabrass is already actively growing it's very difficult to kill. Usually wait for cold weather to kill it off then prevent it. I usually get stuff from Home Depot or Lowes. This. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Spectracide-10-8-lbs-Weed-Stop-For-Lawns-Plus-Crabgrass-Preventer-Granules-Up-To-5-Months-Of-Control-HG-75832-2/202559024?ITC=AUC-81109-23-12140 Weed (dandelion, clover, chick weed) control only works on weeds not crabgrass. It kills when in contact. If the weeds are already there you need to kill them out first then rely on preventer as the year goes on.
nomolites Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I don’t know of anything that will kill it once established but glyphosphate. I tried multiple selective killers on my lawn, and finally I killed it with glyphosphate and reseeded, heavily. I apply 2-4-D early in the year and overseed shortly thereafter to keep it from getting an opportunity, and apply 2-4-D again late in the year to keep the rif raf out. Seems to work OK, so far so good. Mike m&m 1
snagged in outlet 3 Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 One other thing is put down pre emergent every 3-4 months year round. A lot of weeds germinate in the winter. Like those purple flower weeds. Here’s my 2020 list.
Dutch Posted April 22, 2021 Author Posted April 22, 2021 Your 12/6 sta green is the product that I used. Do you think the preventer might work even though the 24d if it actually contained it was worthless. I am not concerned with the weeds i have several products and ways to apply them on the hen bit and dandelions.

Not sure on the sta green since it’s the first time I used it because it’s all I could find in December. I used to use a lot less crabgrass preventer before my current neighbor moved in. His yard is dump so his issues spill over into my yard. Year round preventer is the only way I can keep the crabgrass out.
bobby b. Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 Scotts Halts will work if you get it down early enough and I use a heavy application and do it twice one month apart. If crabgrass comes up, Roundup will kill it and everything else. This year I found my best price for Halts on Amazon. I just did the second application. For other weeds I use a blend of Lesco Momentum Fx2 and Quinclorac 75DF. And then I use just the regular Scotts fertilizer. My bigger issue is Armodillos. The only thing that works for me is a Glock 9mm. snagged in outlet 3, nomolites and Daryk Campbell Sr 1 2
rps Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 Where I live, someone else hires people to use the herbicide, fertilizer, and mow. I highly recommend it.😁 Daryk Campbell Sr, m&m, FishnDave and 2 others 3 2
