Depends on who you follow, and who you are friends with I guess.   I don't see that.

I can't buy into the claimed mortality of immediately released bass.    Those numbers are from fish that were captured, held awhile, had tracking equipment attached to them....and THEN (finally) released.

I am reasonably sure that a bass caught and immediately released is going to survive just fine.   Look at how many Trout are C&Red at the trout parks on a daily basis.....You don't see dead fish everywhere at trout parks because of that, and if what they claim is true then you definitely would see dead fish everywhere.

And bass are way more hearty and resilient than trout are, so....

I do find it hard to believe that catching and immediately released bass causes 5-10% mortality.  But is that because I don't WANT to believe it?  Just don't know.

Well I actually DO want to believe it, because if it were true then one hell of a case against the rediculous number of tournaments being held, could be made. And I'd truly like to see them cut way WAY back on that.

If immediate release results in 5-10% mortality, then holding and transporting to a weigh-in process has to at least triple or quadruple the mortality rate.

But I still can't believe it.

There's no doubt that a few die from poor handling or gill hooking....but I'd say that's about it.   The only reason to suspect it may be more is because someone that we're supposed to believe said so.    Who was that someone?   A Texas biologist in a Ken Smith video?

That's where I heard it....but WTF does HE know?   🙄
