You have the right in the state of Missouri, its called the Castile Doctrine.  Any threat to life or health can be dealt with deadly force.

I think that only applies to humans. Dogs have  higher standing than humans in modern society. There needs to changes in laws that reduce animals to animal status. Killing of another's dog or cat or cow should be "property destruction" and carry a penalty equal to the intrinsic monetary value of the property.

A felony conviction is a lot more than just a time out in a jail, it will change your entire future, the "felon" title is forever and affects many aspects of life, the daughters will never get their lives back either with no dad.

I've never used pepper spray ( bear spray?), but for self defense that won't destroy yourself, it might be just the thing.

I’ve considered getting a concealed carry license just for that dog. Weird part is the owner seems to think it’s not a big deal.

You don't need one in Missouri anymore.  Carry away!

Pretty sure you can shoot a dog in self defense.  Looks like it right here.

Each time ,the owner assured me "the dog won't bite;

Every time I hear that, first thing I think is "sumbitch has teeth don't it?"

I feel the same way about pits.. The neighbor has a couple, one is loud and all bark, the other is quiet and flighty, that's the one to watch.

Always watch them quiet ones!

I would hate to have one of my dogs get shot, however if it is out chasing the neighbors cows and catches a bullet I won't be any madder than I would be it it were chasing cars and finally caught one.  Lost way more to being car chasers that cattle chasers.  God friend had a big white pit that was an absolute wuss, thought every kid was his to protect but otherwise a huge softie.  Reasons could have been many including the fact that their big Malamute was the alpha and he was a happy go lucky whate very letter down the line.   My kids laid on my German Shepard for a pillow when they were in diapers, I would not have wanted to be someone who tried to grab or hurt them while she was aroumd it would have been ugly.

Sister-in-law walked her dog to the dog park daily.  It had played several times with a particular pit bull with no issues.  But one day that pit bull tore her dog up.  Her dog survived a year or so after an expensive vet visit.  Gone now.

A couple months ago, my friend's wife was visiting her parents.  Sitting outside, they heard horrific dog sounds, and went to investigate.  A large dog was calmly holding a small beagle in its jaws.  She managed to wrestle the small dog away from the big dog, but suffered some deep bites to her forearm for her efforts.  The smaller dog had lost a lot of blood.

She called the dog owners repeatedly over the next month, trying to find out what happened.  The owners ignored her calls for the longest time.  She finally heard the small dog had died.  No word on any consequences for the large dog, and no offers to help pay any medical bills incurred by my friend's wife.

I don't like Chow, Akita, Rottweiler and most German Shepherd/Malanois either.  But the dog that always kept me and everybody else who'd been to that house in the car was a Collie.  Sneaky mean she was.  When the owner was outside, fine.  But do not get out and go knock on the door.

My stepson got a bad bite when he was young from a Shepherd.  The owners were given the choice of put the dog down or face a lawsuit.  They were smart enough to disappear the dog.

My wife got knocked down off her bike by a big chow a few years ago.  I had to take care of that one myself as the owners were stubborn.

Somebody dumped a catahoula/lab mix here about a year ago.  He put me back in my truck.
Once.  My patience level for aggression in any dog is very low.

All that said, I love dogs, there are seven living here now.  They don't run loose and the biggest threat to the UPS guy is keeping the heeler from getting in the truck to go for a ride.

Right on one point, animals have more rights now than people.  And you will probably have to shoot the owner after you kill their dog.

The legal defense that follows when the owner tries to sue you  and all of the dog lovers in the court take their side may drain your finances.

But in MO. you can kill a dog defending yourself or your personal livestock.  There are laws that put dog owners responsible for the well being of their pets, they can be charged for animal neglect for failing to keep the animal on their own property or under control.

For some reason Chows and freaking Cocker Spaniels hate me, or maybe they sense that I hate them and respond accordingly.

I experience the exact same effect with horses.   I actually do not like them, and I can't help but look into those big eyes.  I don't think they like that at all.   Piss on them!  😛

If it weren't for monkey's, horses would be my least favorite animal.
