Bill Babler Posted August 24, 2021 Author Posted August 24, 2021 In the late 90's I was guiding for Big Cedar Lodge. I had 3 clients that could all fish baitcasters really well. They were all 3 running Tim Hughes custom painted spooks with front runners. This was 1st. of June and fish were surfacing in Old 86. I mean it was a zoo, everything was blowing. Why I had the Runner on I'll never know. 2 guys on the front deck one on the rear and me taking off fish. Just about as dangerous as fresh water fishing gets. My rule was no swinging fish on board and no taking off or unhooking. I'll Do It, Be Patient. "That never works I always pay the price." Well, that lasted about 45 minutes until the guy in the front swung one and the guy in the middle caught 2 barbs of the size 4 triple hooked front runner just above the knee cap. 4 pound LM with a mouth full of spook caught him in the sock it was terrible Got the fish off cut the line on the front runner took them back to the dock. Last I saw of them it was stuck in his knee and they were headed for Skaggs Hospital. I've got a million of them. Champ188 1 http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
196champ Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 Although I'm sure they didn't think that was funny, it gave me a chuckle reading it. Follow the rules! haha if your ever in the mood to share more such stories, bring it on!
Bill Babler Posted August 24, 2021 Author Posted August 24, 2021 Seems like most everything bad always has a top water bait involved Nick Adams 1 http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Quillback Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 I'm told the ER in the Mountain Home emergency room has a wall full of lures that they've pulled out of people. Every time I hear these stories of people having a treble hook stuck in them with a fish flopping around on on one of the other points it gives me the willies. I think @jdmidwestgot his fingers stuck together on a bait recently. I got close an Taney a few years ago but I had smashed the barbs. One went under my index fingernail. Quillback and Champ188 1 1
196champ Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 knock on wood, i've only had 1 such instance. It was with a rock crawler, flipped a fish in the boat, grabbed him by the back and he went full blown crazy. Only 1 of the hooks got me under the knuckle of my pinky finger, fish flopped so much the hook ripped out. I was fishing in a small buddy tournament and my partner said he was sure we were on our way back to head to the ER! Been close a few other times flipping spoon fish in the boat, those things come out like they were shot out of a cannon, first instinct is to put you hand up. One of these days one will punch me in the hand or another place it shouldn't be Quillback 1
Champ188 Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Gotta tell this one quickly on a buddy of mine. He was just starting to guide on Broken Bow and was taking an overflow trip for an established guide. His clients consisted of a husband, wife and young son. The veteran guide had told him, whatever you do, don't pull out a topwater. These clients are not experienced enough to even cast a topwater so keep them throwing a grub or shaky head. Well, what would happen but the fish would blow up schooling. So while the clients were busy catching them on grubs, the greenhorn guide couldn't stand it anymore and pulled out a Chug Bug and decided to slip in a couple of casts. Sure enough, he got a blowup on the first cast and jerked too soon. The lure comes flying back, hits Mom square in her very large left boobie and buries up. Two of the three barbs on the front hook gone outta sight. ER time, right? Heck no, they insisted on my young guide buddy extracting the bait himself while she gritted her teeth. The woman ends up half topless on the lake and in surgery in the middle of the boat. Long story short, he got the lure out and the trip continued. By the way, when my buddy balked at the woman taking off her shirt and fully exposing the affected boobie, the hubby said, :"Don't worry. You are far from the first person to see them." I doubt HE got to see them for a good while after that comment. 😆😂 big c, cheesemaster and Quillback 3
Ryan Miloshewski Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I have two scars on my fingers from those stupid Megabass hooks. I've since learned to change them out, but boy did they hurt when they went it. First one was on a trout and Doty did the line trick on me..except the first time it didn't come out. He about jerked me onto the boat deck while my finger continued to bleed. I also ripped a nail off with fishing line one time..shudder “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold
DADAKOTA Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 During a tourney a couple weeks back I caught a short on the whopper plopper. Ended up with one point of the tail hook buried in my right index finger from the top corner of the nail to where the hook point was barely out the bottom of the finger. Partner had to cut the O-ring from the bait after removing the fish. Fished the last 25 minutes of the tourney with the hook in my finger. Got home and put the boat away. Made an ice/salt/water brine and chilled the finger good, pushed the barb on through, cut it off, rechilled, and backed the rest on out. No worse for wear.

They do ( or did) About 12 years ago or so my buddy and I were at Bull fishing our yearly tournament. Buried his Wiggle in his thumb. Took the trip to Mountain home, Doc wanted to keep it and add it to the wall. " oh hell no, thats my go to Wart I've had for years"
