I have noticed bowfins getting some love in the last few years…caught them as a kid down south in the Mobile AL drainages…grinnel is what we called them, fighters that would smash a lure. They would get over 10# regularly, definitely ruin a lure…many states giving them gamefish like protections….buddy of mine told me black river ditches in NE Arkansas we could catch all we wanted…..figure a few should be in some of or weedier waters…cool fish

Caught one on the TN River below Pickwick last year.  About a 3 pounder.

Swamp muskies are fun to catch. Powerful fighters. Especially when fishing with @Ham and catch one like this with a 1/32 jig and Bobby Garland body on a Crappie pole 😉

When you trailer a boat 6 plus hours to try for 3 days to catch a Bowfin and you Zero while your Buddy catches two, that's fishing. I had my chances.

I have found a few spots a couple of hours away where the Bowfin are abundant and willing.
This one was targeted and caught on a flyrod.

They are on my bucket list.  I was searching online for information of bowfin around the Saint Louis area.  Found a few folks that are posting pictures, but smartly not giving their spot away.  And another guy on an aquarium website that says he know of very good spot in StL for Bowfin.  It was a post from 2006, I couldn't figure out how to contact the guy, especially without signing up as a member on their forum.

I know @Ham can put me on some. :)

Check out Fishmap.org should have places id'ed where folks have caught or found bowfin. I think that there were some within an hour of you. I know someone that used to catch them near you but will see if I can conecct with them again to get information.

@Johnsfolly You did hook me up with someone who had intel on a bowfin spot.  I appreciate that! :)  Sounded like a Spring spawn location only(?) based on their catching experience.  It looks like it may be on private property, so I didn't follow up too closely.

I checked some Fishmap.org spots.  I zoomed in on the closest one, it was somebody's driveway, not near water. 🙄
