Knuckled Deceiver

Recommended Posts

I've been having luck catching wipers and whites by throwing this at schools of busting  bait fish. It's inspired by Brian Wises Knuckle Head articulated pattern.

I could tie that fly because it looks like most of mine.

Cliche Alert:  So your tying them for fish, not the fisherman :)

I have a collection of flys that, to the unawakened eye, look like hell.  Or at the very least....like nothing special at all....until you have a few days hammering fish on them.

Then they suddenly become beautiful pieces of perfection.

I had a "Dahlberg Diver" that wasn't tied very well, and looked like something a cat had thrown up. I tied it on my kids tippet, figuring that she'd loose it in a tree within the first 10 minutes.    She proceeded to put on a clinic with that thing, and then when it finally fell completely apart she demanded that I tie her a dozen more just like it.    I honestly couldn't tie another one stupid enough to suit her.   🙄

My favorite scud was developed by not having the right materials for the recipe and just winging it. Best scud pattern ever

I’ve always thought it was hilarious to name a fly after yourself…ie the “Dahlberg Diver”. I see Dahlberg makes Whopper Ploppers now, which actually makes him money. It’s easy to spend 30 minutes tying a masterpiece fly. I used to tie jigs quite a bit, I stopped because, with the possible exception of very cold water,  they really don’t fish better than any other lure. But if you sitting in front of the fireplace in the winter with nothing else to do, go for it.
