They dont make replacement timing chains so the only option is a powerhead

Correct.

I believe the Merc XS 4-stroke is an interference engine (meaning that if the timing chain breaks, the piston will hit the valves..... trashing everything).

Therefore there is no point in offering a replacement timing chain. 😅

The timing chain is an integral part of the powerhead......just as the crankshaft is on a 2-stroke...... BUT you can still buy a replacement 2-stroke crankshaft. 😊

What I'm curious about NOW, is how long our boy @seabass03 is gonna have to wait to get it back in service, and whether his warranty will begin again ?     Hopefully they won't claim that it was his fault for not following proper "break-in procedure".   🙄

Yeah, best to stay calm and give them a fair chance to treat you good. 🤞

Paying for any extended warranty offer just feels like a scam to me.....but I have absolutely no experience with it, so my advice is worthless there.   As hard as it is going to be to get parts for that motor in 6-8 years, personally, I wouldn't even consider it unless it was REALLY CHEAP.   Take that extended warranty money and go buy lottery tickets with it. 😊

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the car manufacturers stopped using interference engines some years back.

Are Outboards generally interference engines and if so why?

Should be a quick fix then 👍

I'll tell ya what bugs me, is that the dealerships are not working on older motors hardly at all, and the fact that they claim to constantly be 4-7 weeks booked on WARRANTY repairs......Well that's just troubling.  Isn't it ?

When I say that I'm 2 weeks buried, that doesn't mean that someone that comes in with a job that can be taken care of in  1 hour or less is going to have to wait 2 weeks...... I'll squeeze it in.

Walk through any dealership, at any time, and you'll see mechanics/techs just standing around scratching their balls, in perfectly clean uniforms.  🙄

Wish you were closer. I know you're not a Mercury fan but I'd be happy to have you work on mine anytime.
