I believe the Merc XS 4-stroke is an interference engine (meaning that if the timing chain breaks, the piston will hit the valves..... trashing everything). Therefore there is no point in offering a replacement timing chain. 😅 The timing chain is an integral part of the powerhead......just as the crankshaft is on a 2-stroke...... BUT you can still buy a replacement 2-stroke crankshaft. 😊 What I'm curious about NOW, is how long our boy @seabass03 is gonna have to wait to get it back in service, and whether his warranty will begin again ? Hopefully they won't claim that it was his fault for not following proper "break-in procedure". 🙄 seabass03 1

As hard as it is going to be to get parts for that motor in 6-8 years, personally, I wouldn't even consider it unless it was REALLY CHEAP. Take that extended warranty money and go buy lottery tickets with it. 😊 seabass03 1
Members seabass03 Posted September 23, 2021 Author Members Posted September 23, 2021 thanks wrench...I hear ya....just want to have a nice boat to fish Im a simple guy...Mercury seems a mess right now snagged in outlet 3 1
bobby b. Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the car manufacturers stopped using interference engines some years back. Are Outboards generally interference engines and if so why?

Isn't it ? When I say that I'm 2 weeks buried, that doesn't mean that someone that comes in with a job that can be taken care of in 1 hour or less is going to have to wait 2 weeks...... I'll squeeze it in. Walk through any dealership, at any time, and you'll see mechanics/techs just standing around scratching their balls, in perfectly clean uniforms. 🙄 Wish you were closer. I know you're not a Mercury fan but I'd be happy to have you work on mine anytime. fishinwrench, nomolites and Ron Burgundy 2 1
