Wanted to start a conversation about eye wear.  I wear glasses, progressive.  I have a astigmatism.  I've been buying glasses online for a number of years.  Last winter I bought a pair for regular living... driving and all.  Lately I've had trouble focusing on small things like tiny floats.  I explained to the doc I needed to see the the indicator's smallest movement and I'm not seeing it.  My prescription did change a bit so that answers some of it.

After a long discussion about my cheap eye wear, I've decided she is right.  The glasses you typically buy online are a polycarbonate and tend to have distortions in them.  Not consistent.  And the edges distort.  So I decided to buy a pair there at the doc office.

I used to pay $400 for a pair there.  Online, I started paying $60.  Now it's about $125.  A new pair at the doc office - $650!  But these have a 2 year warranty.  I'm hard on glasses...  that's another reason I order online.

I have found we get what we pay for; I buy new glasses every other year(somewhat offset by insurance) and I have high end polarized scrip glasses(Maui Jim) that are the absolute bomb, especially for fly fishing.  They ain’t cheap though…have had them for 5-6 years and baby them.  Only Zeiss wipes, and rinse first if there is any sand or dirt on them.

650 shouldn't be a deal breaker, you likely profit 3 times that on a single good day.  No? 🤔

Lately I have been getting mine at Walmart.  I have astigmatism, near sighted and I get no line bifocals.  I get the Nikkon lightweight lenses and titanium frames.  I can't remember what they cost me as I got a 2nd pair of prescription polarized no line bifocals lenses at the same time and the total was around $850. 

A few months ago I purchased a pair of prescription safety glasses from rx-safety.com.  Transition lenses, no line bifocal.  They are wrap around and subject to distortion as Phil mentioned.  But I purchased them mainly for the pistol range and for other stuff where I might need safety glasses.  They are fine at the range, but problematic for reading.  Even with the best lenses they offered, the cost was about $225.

I also had Maui Jim RX polarized.  They were awesome.  Get glass lenses and you get what you pay for in glasses.  I got cataract surgery a couple years ago and it is awesome!  I do not miss glasses one bit.  

And with Maui Jim the replace any damaged lense for $60 for life.  I had my RX polarized switched back to ordinary lenses after my surgery.

While we are discussing glasses......I can't seem to find a pair of very light amber tinted lenses.    I need a pair for low light situations.  

Kinda like "night driving glasses" but polorized.

It's not, esp with the 2-year deal.  But I've spent about $1,000 on PT with my ankle the last few weeks so all of it at once is a stretch.  We carry high deductible insurance so we're paying cash for everything.  I just thought it was a big jump for $400 to $650.  I thought maybe the influx of online glasses might drive the price of clinic glasses down but I guess not.  I wasn't ready for it.

I am interested in the life time damage replacement lens Pete mentioned!

I was having the same problem with not being able to focus on the small things the last couple of years. Last year during my annual eye exam I complained to the doc about it and he told me that was as sharp as he could correct my vision because I had been getting cataracts over the last couple of years. Went and had the cataract surgery and Lasik at the same time. I have had no problems and vision is better than 20-20 now. Only thing is some time the light will make the lens show in my eye and have been ask " What is wrong with your eyes". No complaints. Just do your research on what doctor does it for you.

I have taken advantage of that with the non-RX MJs I have on more than one occasion over the years(I wear contact lenses at times) and that warranty is wonderful.

Polarized lenses make a huge difference in visibility and eye fatigue.

                          Astigmatism here too Phil and now trifocals. It just happens.  Let me suggest this please when choosing lenses try Crizal lenses 

    I got to the point I hated to derive at night because of glare. These lenses are the bomb at night. No glare. Other coatings in the past went bad scratched badly and turned kind of rosy colored. The Crizal are guaranteed and they will replace if scratches happen. I have done that once no questions asked. I now just put glasses on when I get up and off at bedtime.  Part of my habit until I get glaucoma and then they will get totally corrected.
