Young hunters harvest 15,608 deer during early youth portion

Top counties include Osage, Franklin, and Howell.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shows that young hunters ages 6 through 15 harvested 15,608 deer during Missouri’s early youth portion of the 2021 deer hunting season, Oct. 30-31. Top counties were Osage with youth hunters harvesting 359 deer, Franklin with 329, and Howell with 310. Youth hunters harvested 15,854 deer during last year’s early youth portion.

View additional harvest numbers for the 2021 early youth portion at Telecheck Harvest Numbers (mo.gov).

“Weather can have a big impact on harvest totals during our shorter season portions,” said MDC Cervid Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle. “Thankfully, the rain we experienced across much of the state late last week moved out just in time for our youth hunters to have some great conditions over the weekend.”

Missouri’s deer archery season continues through Nov. 12 and resumes Nov. 24 through Jan. 15, 2022. The November portion of firearms deer season runs Nov. 13-23 followed by the late youth portion Nov. 26-28. The antlerless portion of firearms deer season runs Dec. 4-12 followed by the alternative methods portion Dec. 25 through Jan. 4, 2022.

Have a friend who hunts the family farm half mile south of us. I remember when his grandpa took him and his brother hunting down there. Grandpa is long gone now but our friends continues to carry on taking their children. All of them and all have taken many, many good deer throughout the years. One of the boys son is married and I am sure will take his child when old enough. Hope I am still around to see this. If this happens I will have witnessed 5 generations taking their first deer.

Here is friends youngest daughter with her deer from Saturday. Congrats to Mac!

I can't wait to see if my grandkids will hunt (or fish🤞) with me. My oldest went out only twice and we didn't get a chance at a shot. Since it was always near Halloween she wanted to hang out with her friends. I took out my son for two youth seasons and he would sleep through the morning hunts and didn't want to hunt in the afternoons. Neither of them have hunted deer since then. Livie is the only one of my kids to have killed a deer and a turkey.

My son wanted him to wait because he had lots of nice racks on camera.  But my grandson was so pumped my son said go ahead and shoot it...😂

Glad that he did. It's his hunt. At least he has the option to upgrade as he gets older.

I feel bad for those kids in the hunting videos that shoot a giant on a guided hunt and then are not likely to repeat it.

Never give up. My daughters would go fishing with me when they were younger but all quit as they got older. My youngest wants nothing to do with it. But recently the two oldest have asked to go. Both of them want me to show them how to fly fish and neither knows that the other has requested the same thing.
