Uncle and his friends used to fish for gar with a 6-8" piece of frayed nylon rope and teeth tangle them. I wonder if a fly rod model of that rope couldn't be made with frayed Bonnie Braid?

I have made them with nylon rope that I can throw with the fly rod. Have caught with them but limited results. Good sharp hook if you can get the gar to turn and set into corner of the mouth.

Messing with gar is a short lived obsession.   I think everyone goes through it for awhile, until they have some success.......then they are done with it for life.     That's me.

I don't know anyone who keeps at it for long (year after year).   It's like a rite of passage. 🙄

Go ahead and get it over with! 😅

I went through the rough fish phase.  Lasted several years.   Even though the fight is good (especially carp and drum) it loses something when you finally drag the ugly things up to unhook them.  Plus the line slime😂

I hear you.  Such an ancient and interesting, toothy fish.  I find they are fun to catch for a short while each year.  The thrill factor soon drops.  Then I generally ignore them, unless nothing else is hitting.  Or if I see a bigger one.  Or a longnose (most of the ones here are shortnose).  I still want to catch a Spotted Gar and Alligator Gar on fly.

Grass Carp are fun, as are Drum and Common Carp.  Really, I enjoy any fish I can catch, and I like variety.  I'm not eating any, so I'm not going to poo-poo any fish that is willing to play.  They are all fun.  If good, wadable smallmouth streams were closer, and not flooded or crowded, I'd be fishing for them more for sure.  I'm doing my best to enjoy what is nearby, most of the time.  Yep... like @BilletHead says, love the one you're with. ;)

Caught some more last night.

They are all fun

The most fun you can have with a gar, is chasing your wife into a snake infested thicket with one.

Something about a giant living dildo with teeth really freaks out the ladies. 🤷‍♂️
