Terrierman Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 Diesel draws water. Be sure to have a good fuel/water separator in the line before fuel pump or injectors. And drain/change that bulk tank every year. Or you will wish you had. From a person who's got a fair amount of experience with diesel fired generators, from small to run a sewer plant, to large to run Big Cedar Lodge.
fishinwrench Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 Probably best to fire it up every month or so to keep things circulating. Otherwise that SOB will fail on ya when you actually need it.

Run on load for about 30 minutes. Keeps fuel fresher in the engine, dries out the windings, confirms the transfer solenoids work, all that kind of silly stuff.

Getting it hooked up might cost. oneshot After the ice storm a few years ago we bought a generator and hired an electrician to set it up. He wired it into the breaker box and has a box on the back of our house so if the power goes out we can move the generator to the box, throw the electric input main breakers (so we can’t accidentally kill power line repair men), pull the connecting cord out, plug in the generator and fire it up. Our generator is not big enough for the whole house at once so we have to selectively control other breakers. Having it done by a qualified person is a must and can keep you from killing someone. Correct, A line crew, serviceman or troubleshooter out on an outage shudder at the sound of a home generator. Those transformers that give you useable voltage into your house can and will work in reverse too. Nothing worse than a hack trying to hook a generator to his fuse box. bfishn and Terrierman 2 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!"
