The loudest thing I ever heard was an F3 tornado in my living room.   My ears have been ringing non-stop since March 12  '06

They have a very unique sound. I've never been in the middle of one like you but I have been close enough to hear several. I remember the look on my wife's face several years ago when we heard one at our house. Really freaked her out and she has never been afraid of storms.

Yeah it was a rush.   Started out with the typical freight train sound that everyone always describes, then begins to sound like a 747 headed for the house, then about 2 minutes worth of the highest pitch scream that you can imagine.   Followed by immediate dead silence.   Creepy as hell.   It all plays out in my head over and over, even 15+ years later.

Dude. Everyone knows that was you! LOL

When I was in 8th grade my dad and I had to hide behind a big old mound of earth by a strip pit we were fishing out in Kansas one day. That one freaked me out a bit.

So, I am truly curious.   A fighter jet has one engine I believe,  and most commercial jets have 2 even 4 engines.   I can usually hear the fighter jets long before I can focus on them.   But the commercial jets,  not so much.   Why is that?

Military jets usually have two engines, and they are incredibly loud. I have some hearing loss that I got from working on them years ago. The noise  might have something to do with the shape of the engines, number of fans, and exhaust design. They are long and narrow with more fans than a large diameter civilian jet engine with only a few rotating fans. The exhaust on the military engines are variable too. The exhaust can narrow and expand based upon the amount of throttle. A jet mech could tell you more. I just fixed electronic gizmos. They get even louder when they light up the afterburners.

Altitude ?  🤔

Fighter jets are typically closer to the ground, no?
