Boating Rules - Question

It's hard to find this particular rule, at least Missouri-specific --

When underway, how far are you supposed to be from another boat that is not underway?  50 ft?  100 ft?  I'd like to have the reference.

There's no rule/law that I'm aware of.  

It's 100' for a dock.

 

You can get a stack of these at any marina or license office

  100 feet if over no wake speed according to this  https://revisor.mo.gov/main/OneSection.aspx?section=306.125  They reference an occupied anchored boat, docks etc.   I'm not sure if a boat underway, not anchored,  is the same. Guessing  it is since this applies to swimmers and boats our size don't require a daylight "at anchor" shape.

No sir.  Anchored means "anchored".   Literally.    And technically (as of today) Power Poles and drift socks don't count...... believe it or not. 

I always found that odd, since you can't really tell if a boat is "anchored" or not from 100' away.

Drag a 3' piece of rope over both sides, and put a little 1/16oz. anchor (crappie jig) on the end of it.    😂

Yeah, I got an answer indirectly from a MWP officer.  Unless "reckless and imprudent", there's no rule on distance between 2 underway vessels.  I told them they need a "special Taneycomo rule".

Agree with the Taneycomo rule. Last summer I watched a guy on full plane weave in and out of all the boats (20 or so) from Fall Creek to Short Creek. He came within 15-ft of them. It was one of the most ignorant and dangerous things I've seen on the water. Everybody was yelling at him but he just kept going. Sometimes you just have to idle, and that is ok. People seem to be in such a rush and somebody is going to get hurt. I am honestly surprised nobody has died on Taneycomo over the last three years, and that scares me.

They would have to do the same thing in the spring in Beaver Creek, Flat Creek and James River just to name a few.

Writing a specific law would be very tricky. As mentioned, how would you determine if another was underway or not?. Secondly, some areas may not have enough usable water to give a reasonable distance between bank and structure. Add jet boats to the equation, as they need to stay on plane, makes it really sloppy.   

 

Courtesy. That is what people really need to start preaching and bragging about. The social dynamics change when people start bragging.
