So back to my question... which do you prefer?

Depends on the fly. Maybe even the fish. The flies I just sent you have a craft fur tail because of a specific fish. One fat largemouth bass that lives in a little spot on the James river. I did that because I felt the regular version of that fly was too stiff among other issues. It was tied with deer hair. But I didn't want something as limp as marabou. Actually that whole fly, color and all, was created because of that one fish.

Did some size 4 and in more natural colors. Seems everybody throws white/chartreuse and olive/yellow so thought I'd change some up. Added a helmet to some instead of eyes, too.

Looking good Ryan. I skip the helmets on my double deceivers and do exactually like you did with the mask. More versatile and let the various IPS sink tips and full sinking lines do the work. My favorite colors are in this order natural gray over white then go crazy with red over white, pink over white and chartreuse over white.  Most all will be those colors in the first half and maybe subtitle matching colors in second hook if any at all.

Well after having a very big brown move and try to eat a double deceiver Tuesday I hit the vise. Playing around with a lot of combos with deer hair (hate), craft fur, marabou, and color patterns. I need to get the heads finalized and I'd be confident in selling them. I've been using the fish masks but I am going to try the Solar EZ Flex resin and see how that works out. Any feedback is welcomed. I'd be willing to swap with folks as well! Did I mention I hate deer hair?

Thanks! I like the red and white idea! Just trying to think outside the box. The White especially is just bombarded with the same colors and profiles constantly. Fly tying is about experimentation, I figure!

You are not old enough to remember the red/white combo when it was very, very popular. It caught fish then and it catches fish now. Again one of my favorite combos. I literally smash hybrids on that color.

Marty, are you trying to say that because I remember the Dowjiwac minnow I might be old. How about the red and white hula poppers or Creek Chubb River Runt.

I'll tie some up. @dpitt and I are going to hit up Clinton up here and try and get some whites and wipers this spring.

I probably have one in an old tackle box. Still have lots of the other color patterned Hula Poppers. Was my favorite bass bait as a teen.
