still haven’t thrown a fly for smallies.  😐

Get Tim Holschlag's book, "Smallmouth Flyfishing", and while it's fun and worthwhile, I agree, I can't say I'm sold on the idea.  I've caught plenty on the fly, but around here, there are better methods.

I'm sorry but TH is a clown.  A so-so fisherman and a lousy writer.

If you wanna learn Smallmouth Flyfishing then a day or two with http://ozarksweetwater.com/  or https://osaguidesoutfitters.com/ will save you years of frustration and milage.

While I see the value of a guide I prefer to figure it out myself.  I thought about doing a few guide trips when I got my river jet.   As much for learning about running jets as fishing.  But I’ve done it on my own.
Took me 3 years to get a 20”er in the boat.  Banged my boat around a little but it’s been the most fun and rewarding experience I’ve had fishing.   I still can’t wait for the next trip.
Aside from fishing exclusively for big trout I’ve lost my zeal for fly fishing for trout.   There’s been plenty of trips I could have switched to fly gear and probably hammered smallies.   Maybe this spring I’ll throw a rod and some flies in the boat.

I totally understand what you are saying and that’s how I roll 99.999% of the time. But the only time I have ever been actually tired of catching smallmouth was with Jeff Trigg at Ozarks Sweetwater. We had a couple of miles to go and he was telling me the spots to hit and at that point I was done. It hurt too much to cast anymore and I had seen plenty of fish for the day.

Not only was it a great day for numbers, I also learned a lot more in that one day than what I had “figured out” in 15 years.

I can’t vouch for the other recommendations but Wrench could show you a thing or two as well.

I guess I'm not a very good trout catcher, in almost 50 years with the fly rod I've never caught a trout on  either an an egg fly nor SJ Worm and it's not because I didn't try them.

Tom Nixon has always been my bass fishing reference. So I probably don't know much about them either. Never heard of Tim Holschlag, but when I look him up, the dude is dead so he no longer is either a clown or a writer.

I'd be deathly afraid of what *thing* he might show :D
