Sure they can. Why not?

Some species of hawks eat some species of turtles, and that can depend on location and season. But, yes hawks eat turtles, and some species of hawks eat venomous  snakes too.

The squirrels & rabbits don't stand a chance around here because the hawks monitor the roads and get them if they try to cross.   Never thought about the turtles.

I wish they'd eat cats !

One thing about the forum, you learn stuff all of the time.  Never thought a bird could peel a turtle out of a shell.

Hell I was surprised that it picked it up so smoothly and just flew off with it.   It wasn't really a full grown one.....but it wasn't a little baby by any means.    Half the size of a 5lb. Coffee can !

hard to picture that; I've never seen a 5# coffee can. The old 3# cans were about 6 3/16"x 7" and 2# cans were 5 1/8" by 6 1/2", but for decades the cans I see have been reduced to capacities like 2lb 13oz instead of 3lb.; 11oz instead of 1lb.

That hawk was just trying to help it cross the road.

Two times this spring I have seen a people park their car, get out, grab a box turtle and get it across the road.

I clipped a dillo on my way to the lake a few days ago, 2 of them sprinted from the left side of the road right into me, no time to react, thought I might get by them before they got under the truck, but got one of them with the back wheel.  Don't mind having one less dillo in the world, but didn't want one bouncing off the truck or the boat.
