Hi all,

I’ve got a large square back canoe (more like a small boat than a canoe) and I’m tired of car topping it /we sold my truck, so I’m interested in getting a trailer for it. It’s a 13ft Discovery Sport by Old Town.

But I’m realizing that a lot of the cheaper used trailers on things like Facebook marketplace dont have titles. Is this just a  luck of the draw until I find one that will both fit my canoe, my budget ($450), AND has a title? Any advice on where to look or how to go about this? I guess I’m looking for some guidance on if this is going to be such a needle-in-haystack type of search, should I just be saving up and trying to buy a new trailer? ($1,500+. 🤨)

how can trailers end up not having a title in a state that requires it?

You're doing right by passing on them.    Usually it is a nightmare trying to get a title, and plain not worth it.   Every once in a while they will pop up with title.   Usually needing work.    As far as the abundance of untitled options,  I always expect them to have been stolen at one point.   There could be other factors,  but in the end, if you want to get a license plate, you need a title.

If you could get someone to inspect it as homemade you could show that and get a title application.

That USED TO work, but they changed the rules about 10 years ago.

Call the DMV and ask them.

As mentioned, the laws changed around homemade trailers, all of them need to be inspected by the highway patrol or the sheriff's office in your county now. You used to not need the inspection for trailers under a certain length, not anymore.

I did one a couple years ago and it was pretty straight forward. Sheriff deputy looked it over, attached the VIN plate, gave me my paperwork and sent me on my way. Obviously you wouldn't want to try it with something that wasn't clearly homemade or heavily modified.

Buying from out of state can work, but you still need the registration documents. A bill of sale scribbled out onto a sheet of notebook paper probably isn't going to fly.
