First four - redear, bluegill, green sunfish, and longear.
next five - looks like a green / bluegill hybrid, orangespotted, possibly a warmouth, possibly a flier, and a redbreast sunfish
Ketchup from a conservation stand point, we should be encouraged to harvest the younger does especially. These animals are the most likely to die during the winter. Up until that time they would be competing against those older animals that are more likely to survive if they did not have to compete with the younger and more abundant deer. I also understand from a buck standpoint letting the deer mature and pass on their genetics is just as important for a well managed population. I will never fault anyone for harvesting a legal animal.
Good luck and if you see them just shoot away. Just let me know if you don't want any of those bad parts of the deer like the hams and shanks !
I shot a fawn doe during the urban season about 10 years ago that could not have been more than 60 lbs wet. I carried her to my vehicle on my shoulder. I kept one of the hams fully intact (with the bone in). After some back and forth discussion with Chef Scott Leysath (now the Sporting Chef; at the time was on Hunt, Fish, Cook), I prepared an injectable marinade with rosemary, garlic, and olive oil and injected the meat. I cooked it to medium rare and served it for Christmas dinner. that was one tender and tasty venison meal. Just describing this is making me salivate !
Sounds like you guys did pretty well for a three hour fishing trip! Congrats to all of you! You do have to be a little less camera shy and post a few more photos☺. I mean a 3 lb rainbow and we get to see a small brown trout photo. Out of Buzz's 15 fish total at least one had to be photo worthy☺!
Don't know where I will be next year but will put down a possible trip to Capp's for Ollifest XII!
My personal preference is to hang my deer for three or four days to allow the muscles to go into rigor and then loosen again as the weight pulls the muscle fibers apart. Unless I am far from a road or have a big animal that needs me to pack out the meat, I wouldn't break down a deer that way on a regular basis.
Sounds like a great time Griz! I have only hunted wuth dogs on a single quail hunt and a rabbit hunt. I enjoyed watching the dogs on both trips. That was easy to do since I didn't hit a bird or rabbit on either trip.
Congrats on a great day fishing with your family and on your first post! Good luck in the future and I look forward to seeing many posts in the future! Great photos as well!
He reminds me of Slim Whitman the yodeling cowboy! Back in High school I wanted to buy my friend a Slim Whitman album as a gag gift but they wanted $20 for his album! That wasn't recently either. I don't know how he sold more albums than Elvis at those prices☺!
Mitch - you'll have to post a YouTube video of Slim if you could find one☺!
Haris122 - congrats in your successful mananged hunt!
I have two memorable drags. Several years ago I had access to a farm near my house. The woman that owned the property did not want me to gut any deer on her property. Didn't want her dog bringing animal parts up to her house. Had bad experience in the past. It was the last evening of the antlerless season and I had a doe and her fawn coming towards me. At 40 to 50 yards I shot the doe and dropped her in her tracks. The fawn ran off to the woodline and walked back and forth. Another doe was coming with her two fawns snorting at the fallen deer. I watched her and did not even think about shooting her until she headed back the direction she came. As I headed out to the fallen doe the doe came back towards me and I shot her. Instead of dropping she ran 250 to 300 yards in the opposite direction. Had to go to both ends of the cut field to get both does loaded on my two wheeled cart.
The second drag was on a buck that I shot about a 1.25 mile from my vehicle. The memorable part was that my wife was 5 months pregnant with our youngest at the time. She had to sufffer me field dressing the deer while she had morning sickness. This was the first deer that I used my two wheeled cart. We got to an area where we had to lift the deer over a barbed wire fence. I picked a spot on the fench where they had put in a wooden frame where they tightened the fence. My wife was on the other side if the fence as we were going to get the deer across. I had the back end of the deer in my face as I was lifting/sliding the deer over the fence. As I was pushing and lifting I didn't see that his head dropped down and was pushed up against the fench post. So I am pushing harder just as my wife saw the head pushed against the fence and pulled it up releasing the deer. At that time I was pushing hard enough for the deer and cart to go flying over the fence and nearly on top of my pregnant wife. To this day that was known as the day that I threw a deer at my wife☺!
Good luck Ketchuo. I understand having a crappy season. Only saw deer on the opening day. None since. I'm likely to head out on Sat. Not confident that I will get into any deer.
I love seeing state records fall. Also when it is one of these.under targetted species. Somehow I got off the MDC news list. Thanks Phil for posting this article.
