After the Thanksgiving meal a card game or a board game was next in line. Now everyone is gearing up for the next buying orgy. I worked PT for BP for many years and black Friday was always a favorite day to work to watch the crazy people. Used to arrive at the store around 4:30 and people would be in line already. And in Chicago its pretty brisk out at 5AM. I guess there is real magic in $10 hoodies & jeans. But traditions are always evolving. Now my kids & their cousins meet up for breakfast after early morning shopping. Thats become their tradition. Hard to accept our memories are not what everyone still wants. I never worked on Thanksgiving but plenty of people were who did not have families or welcomed the extra pay. Stores would not be open holidays or even Sundays if people didn't shop then.

Nicely put.

Yep, there are two sides to every story. Good Points!

I think there is two sides. Usually they ask who wants to work the holidays and or split shifts to accommodate the holiday. Also not everybody has family or chooses to eat with them for whatever reason. Or maybe they want to pay off a school loan or work to buy presents for Christmas. Many reasons. I don't think veterans should have to work on veterans day while state employees have it off. This bothers me 10x more than people working a few hours on thanksgiving.

I'll be shopping Last Chance, Monster or Tackle Warehouse Black Friday. 20% off everything, free shipping, better selection and better pricing than the big box guys. No thanks Bass Pro

Yep.  I was a city firefighter back in the 70's and 80's and always used to swap out holidays with guys who had family and or young kids.  I wasn't married (which back then usually also meant no kids!) and there was just my mom and dad and my brother and me so we could get together pretty much anytime and do our holiday thing.  The family guys always appreciated it and I enjoyed the extra money that came with working the holidays.

That being said, I also appreciate and agree with the folks who think everything (retail anyways) should be shut down so everyone at least has the chance to do the family thing if they want.  But then again sometimes it's hard to remember that for all the traditional, holiday loving folks in the world there's also a ton of poor people who dread the holidays cause of the depression, loneliness and sadness that it brings.  Tuff world sometimes.

Yes, these folks are sometimes right under our noses. Something as simple as an invite to dinner or slipping someone in need a 20 can make a world of difference.
