Smithvillesteve Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Great topic on the rain gear. Great pic of winter float trip. Now, my question to you boys: What is the best cold weather base layer? I have some of Cabela's ECWCS that I use for cold weather deer hunting. But I cant remember if it is for the coldest weather possible. On the answers to best cold weather rain gear several of you mentioned Under Armour. I am going on a trout trip to Taneycomo in late Jan and want to go buy the best cold weather base layer i can get!! I have seen that Under Armour has a base layer at 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0. With 4.0 being rated for extreme cold conditions and so forth. Any advice boys?? Sincerely appreciated!!

Members yellowgtman Posted January 13, 2016 Members Posted January 13, 2016 I've got the under armor 3.0 bottoms and top and they seem to me like if you're not doing something pretty active and moving a lot you'll get cold. Guess I need to add some more layers.

mic Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Not to hijack your thread, but does one need 100% wool or will a poly/wool blend keep you warm (in case you get wet)?
fishinwrench Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have a pair of polypro long johns, some fleece jogging pants, and a pair of slick nylon running pants and a fleece jacket (in that order). Over that I wear breathable waders and a lightweight wading jacket. Even if you go in over your head into the water for 15 seconds you won't take on enough water to bother you much. I've done it.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Same as wrench. Polypro Patagonia base layer, fleece wading pants, wind proof fleece jacket. Breathable waders. LL Bean is the only company that consistently has wind proof fleece. That stuff is great. Pete

Fish24/7 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 my skinny friends really do like the UA though. My current version of under armour is a tshirt that I wore back in 8th grade that's super skin tight and 3" too short now. Champ188 and dtrs5kprs 2
