Jerry Rapp Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 this may shut this thread down, but if you sit around drinking coffee with your friends in the morning, or sit around with friends after work soothing out the day, what Trump is saying is what the majority of common sense people want. Everything he says will never be implemented as Congress will still be in existence. But sometimes when things go so far to one side, you have to bounce back with another one who is far on the other side. Reagan turned out pretty good for the country, and I admit I did vote for Jimmy the first time and whoever ran against Reagan the 2nd time. But after 40+ years of voting and watching I would like to think I may have learned something. Mitch f 1
fishinwrench Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Yeah I can't help but think that Trump is in it to really make a difference. He isn't gonna do anything too stupid because he does love his children and grand children. Singlehandedly he probably couldn't accomplish anything, but you don't get to where he is without being very good at negotiating and choosing the right people for their perspective jobs. He will likely take some calculated gambles and things might get scary for a bit, but I'd bet the end game would be a win. I think if given the chance he would make some very noticable improvements. Bernie has been crowing the same crap since the 1980's, he's incapable of doing anything other than stating that he recognizes what the problem is and repeating over and over the way things SHOULD BE.

Wait a minute...isn't that exactly what Trump has been doing? Where has he given a concrete answer as to HOW he's going to accomplish any of the things he's said he's going to do? Gonna build a wall to keep the immigrants out and have the Mexicans pay for it? I guess we all hear what we want to hear from these guys. I'm not thrilled about any of them on either side. But seems to me that Trump is the king of speaking platitudes with no substance. Yeah, we all want to make America great again, etc. etc. But I want to hear some ideas on HOW. He's real good on where we need to be, but real short on how to get there. Having said all that...I don't think Trump would be a disaster as president. In fact, of the Republicans, I'm beginning to like him the best, which is scary. And I like Bernie the best among the Democrats at this point...but I can't think of an election that excited me less than this one. Trav and MOPanfisher 2
fishinwrench Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 We hear what we want? That's probably true. I'm not sure I hear Trump saying exactly how he plans to get us better deals, ect. But I think I understand how he will. And I have a lot of faith in his ability to pull it off. He has played the media like a fiddle, creating just the right amount of controversy to keep himself in the center of every discussion. Friggin' brilliant! His home is nicer than the Whitehouse, and he makes more money doing what he does already than he will as president. He has nothing to gain by being president except to do some great things and leave a legacy of himself that his kids and grandkids will be proud of. IMO that is what he is in it for, and we can all benefit from that IF it works out. The man might talk like a crass jackoff compared to the status quo bullshitters that we are all used to listening to, but when he enters into a deal his track record of coming out on top is darn good. And considering the current state that this country is in I think we need someone that is a business psychologist and not afraid to play his strengths. He obviously knows how to size people up and persuade them to play fairly. I think it would be a very interesting thing to watch happen. I hope he gets a chance.
Norm M Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Bring back programs like the CCC and WPA . Rebuild the infrastructure and clean up the environment. turn welfare into work fare for all that are able to work. teach some useable skills, pay decent wages and let them pay taxes instead of living on tax dollars. Legalize marijuana , gambling and prostitution, regulate and tax it. quit tossing folks in jail for that stuff , save a lot of tax dollars . Why do textbooks need to be redone what seems like every semester, there isn't that much new ground being broken on a regular basis. Change a semi colon in the third paragraph of a half dozen pages doesn't justify making new text books necessary. As a matter of fact do away with regular text books altogether, let them use electronic books. That way if there are changes needed , it can be done digitally. Dump no child left behind, a total joke and waste of time and money. Let's teach the kids how to pass standardized tests but not be able to think and reason for themselves . Fix the crushing student loans, there are a couple generations saddled with insane amounts of debt. How are they ever going to be able to afford to buy houses, cars and durable goods. As Al said, do a energy Manhattan project , I agree with the positives he pointed out. Corporations that make billions but pay very little in taxes while the middle class has been taxed pretty much out of existence , nah nothing wrong there . Shoot they ought to pay a very large tax hit for every job they exported out of this country , that can go to retraining and the CCC/WPA stuff . Do not let legislators at any level vote themselves benefits that the constituents do not receive. Give every candidate a limited number of hours of free tv and radio time, a limited predetermined amount of print exposure. Limit what they can talk about to the problems at hand and their solutions. No attacks, mud slinging or other such nonsense. Limit the campaigning to say two months before the election which is held every four years for every position . No need for raising campaign funds either , you say your stuff on the free time allotted and shut up. They spend the rest of the four years actually working on problems that need to be solved . Just think how much less junk in the mail and annoying phone calls as well . Do away with political parties, everyone is an independent . It's about time to start taking care of our service vets they way they deserve. It's a shame the way it is right now. As a society we need to take care of the elderly the infirm who cannot care for themselves and our children. Police, fire, ems, teachers , nurses should be esteemed rather than entertainers in any field, including sports . Make training and paying them a fair wage a .priority . Tolerate the beliefs of others, you don't have to agree, just don't try to restrict others rights to live the way they wish . Just some thoughts from a long haired old hippie that still has some red neck under that hair Trav, MOPanfisher and fishinwrench 3 what a long strange trip it's been , put a dip in your hip, a glide in your stride and come on to the mother ship , the learning never ends
Trav Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 I have no room in my world for bigots. Trump is a bigot. Bernie walked with MLK. <------ feeling the Bern still. I find it funny nobody is talking about anyone else but Bernie or Trump. In all actuality Hillary has the fattest resume of them all. If you look at the candidates as work history instead of personalities the Dems own this election. The only real guy for the GOP with a long job history in government is Jeb and he is where? Trump has turned the GOP into a freaking circus and the Dems are capitalizing with the kinder more polite approach. You do get more flies with honey. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Quillback Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Should The Bern win out, he would have a big problem with Congress going along with his agenda. I see Hillary as being more pragmatic and willing to work with Congress to get things done, I'm no Hillary fan at all BTW. I like the Manhattan project model in regards to energy research. But, you have to remember that the Manhattan project was done is complete secrecy, no Congressional involvement, no public knowledge. VP Truman didn't know of it's existence until Roosevelt died. Prior to detonating the first A-bomb, Oppenheimer was a little bit concerned that the detonation might cause some kind of uncontrollable atom splitting chain reaction that could destroy the world - probably a thought that would have caused some concern to the Congress and the public if it had been an open program. Any giant energy project funded by the feds will have public and congressional involvement, I'd like to think we could pull it off, but I just don't think we can do that kind of stuff anymore unless it is under circumstances of extreme duress. My biggest concern is our 19 trillion (and growing) debt. We've already mortgaged the future, kids entering the workforce now are going to be effected by this debt for the rest of their lives. All I'm hearing from the candidates on both sides is about the spending programs they want to create, free college tuition, building walls, tax cuts, etc. No word about paying for any of that stuff. It's all about getting elected, the heck with the consequences. I'm not excited by any of the candidates.

(Sorry if someone else did and I missed it). That is undoubtedly the single biggest issue we have. I hope everyone realizes that the only reason those pieces of paper in our wallets work is because we, and the rest of the world, think they will.
