176champion Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I had some fuzzy jig heads years ago that you put a crawdad sent on the fuzzy jig head in which it retained the sent...forgot the name of the product but it was a kit sort to say and i know the stuff smelt bad...lol. Ok found the bottle and it was whiZkers, essence of crawdad..i do believe it was a kit with the fuzzy jig heads and essence.. I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Donna G Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 My new deal is Smelly Jelly. I offer to sell it to Champ188 at greatly inflated rates when I'm catching fish. JJ's is good stuff, but will not come off your skin for a week if you get it on you. I have an office job and you can catch some weird looks sporting yellow digits. Champ188 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 There was also a plastic worm in the late 80s called a Kangaroo that had a little pouch molded into it where you could put a small piece of cotton soaked in Fish Formula or some other scent. I believe Mann's made it at the time and it appears another company has revived it. Codywskeeter1521 and dtrs5kprs 2
motoman Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Like others, I dig the scent pastes (mega strike, Kvd scent sticks, etc) in the glue-stick style containers. They stay on the drag baits longer and aren't too messy. - Funny thing is; my buddy and I that I fish with joke about not having enough 'Sawce!' On our baits; when we aren't getting bit. So we then slop it on..........strangely enough...........we tend to get bit shortly thereafter. Not sure if it's actually the 'Sawce!'.........or just a renewed confidence in what we are throwing that gets our head back in the game?.:-P............either way, I always have some handy in the boat. MOPanfisher Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I always seem to have several small nasal spray bottles with (basic saline spray 98 cents full) laYing around empty. Pop off the top and remove the little tube. Fill it with your favorite scent and you can drip/ooze it out with a small squeeze. Fits it about any pocket, I have used it for anise and some sort of liquid crawdad stuff, works great. Like champ there only one or two times I can point to and say it made a difference, one of them was trolling crank baits and catching walleye and whites while my buddy and two of his boys had nothing. They even made fun of me, wasn't long befor the boys had their lures in my face to be juiced and promptly started catchinf fish. Some is confidence for sure. Fish24/7 and Champ188 2
Mitch f Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 If you imagine current, no matter how small, is sending a signal with your bait that's dipped in scent. I think the fish are curious enough to follow a scent trail and come over to investigate, then maybe see your lure and take it. Then the scent might might help them hold on long enough to get hooked. If you add fluorocarbon line, a better technique, right size bait, color, etc., you're putting all the odds in your favor and it might translate to more bites during the day. ps.....that's my story, and I'm sticking to it? Nitro 750 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I remember in the late 80,s people would take the tube worm and put a small piece of alka-seltzer in the hollow tube of the worm and the fizz would make the bass hit it. I think the bass would hit it only if they had a upset stomach!!! Flysmallie 1
176champion Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Think about it...we put deodorant on to be more attractive so why not fishing lures.(.im always outside of the box on my thinking) Just saying Codywskeeter1521 and mixermarkb 2 I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! She dunked her jig in PowerBait Bass formula while I threw mine out there with no scent. After she caught 4-5 straight keeper smallmouths while I went without a bite, I wised up and dunked my jig. Immediately, I began catching fish, too, and we ended up catching about a dozen total off that one point. i use that stuff all the time i call it the secret sauce ] Smallie Seeker, Champ188 and Codywskeeter1521 3
Quillback Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 My buddy Jeb used to use scent all the time when we fished together and we never noticed any difference in catch rates between scent and no scent - I never used any. But it did lead to him catching catfish! I should have tried some the other day when the bass would tap the wobble head, but drop it. Would've made for a good test, but they did start biting it better later, had I put some scent on I would have said it was the scent that got them to bite better. But then again, I was using a Strike King Structure Bug which has built in coffee scent. This kind of stuff is what makes bass fishing so much fun, trying to figure out what they want. I have some Smelly Jelly Craw scent - it really has a strong smell, I'm going to start putting some on the plastics and see if it makes a difference. I tell you though, I have never smelled a crawfish that smells as nasty as that Jelly, as a matter of fact, I really don't detect much if any odor on a craw at all. Of course you don't want to put your nose on one and risk getting pinched. Codywskeeter1521, Donna G, 176champion and 2 others 5
