David Unnerstall Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 My wife and I "boondock" it but we gave up the tent last year. I built a teardrop with cedar strip sides to match my canoe. It is always packed and when you get there you can just climb in and go to sleep. ness, BilletHead and Daryk Campbell Sr 3
ness Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 Sweetness! I'd love to see more pics on your setup. John
Ketchup Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 The fact that you built it David, makes it a very cool setup. The ease of towing is nice. I'm with Ness, more pictures of the interior/exterior would be great. TinBoats BassClub. An aluminum only bass club. If interested in info send me a PM.
David Unnerstall Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 I posted a link to my Facebook page on this but I will upload some pictures, here. Now this is still not complete but usable. The galley cabinets have not been started. I have screwed in a piece of plywood and varnished and use that as a counter. The teardrop is convenient. I just pack a cooler. It is easy to get in (no fighting with a tent zipper), the top vent has a fan and brings air in the windows of the doors, at night. The modified Harbor Freight kit: The deck: It starts to look like a teardrop: The spars: The cedar strips: The doors and exterior skin: At night last weekend: Ham, ness, Mitch f and 2 others 5
Ketchup Posted June 27, 2016 Author Posted June 27, 2016 Nice work. So much more enjoyment when it's built with your own hands. TinBoats BassClub. An aluminum only bass club. If interested in info send me a PM.
grizwilson Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 My favorite is floating and canoe camping on the gravel. We have a 5th wheel, I do double pull but do not go too far from home that way. We take the 5th wheel out west "modified boondock" run the generator every few days to charge batteries, have a carrier for the little motorcycle on back, wife can drive down to town for supplies etc. I am not left a foot. Nice to have a shower etc. lots less work than the old wall tent. Terrierman Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 I've had three Airstreams and an older aluminum Avion, a 28' Thor gas powered motorhome and a Fleetwood Discovery 31' diesel pusher. Motorhomes are the ultimate in comfortable traveling but they are a maintenance nightmare and they are all money pits. Plus you need to tow something to drive once you get where you want to be. What a pain! Very happy day when I finally sold that Fleetwood. I got so burned out on it I went back to using nothing more than a tent or if it was wet, a foam mattress in the bed of the truck under the topper. That finally got old again too (like me) and I bought another travel trailer. 26' lightweight with one slide. For me the essentials are A/C, a bed, a toilet and a shower. Trailer is the way to go if you ask me. Tow mine with 1/2 ton Ram with the hemi motor. Strongest motor in a pickup I've ever had. I did put a hitch on the trailer bumper but have yet to tow boat with it. That day is coming though. Ham, grizwilson and ness 3
Ham Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 My wife and I keep toying with the idea of buying a trailer. So far we have not. She loves the look of the smaller Airstreams (< 25 foot). I'm not sure that we will ever get one, but I am having 50 amp electric service put in next to my boat barn in case friends or family want to visit with a camper and plug in. A water and sewer hook up would be nice, you may need a meter on the electric, a fire pit would also be nice..... As for the airstream in my opinion this is what not to do: https://www.facebook.com/PerrymanAirstream/ Takes up too much floating and fishing time... g “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
Ham Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Hey Griz, I'll run you a hose, but you'll have to hang onto your poop. I'll let you in the house to potty and shower. We have a fire pit you are welcome to use. I'll try to have seasoned fire wood on hand for you. Ham ps : close to White River and Crooked Creek.
