Um, no.  Even at the worst, most cynical outlook it would only be relocating the pollution not polluting more.  Tires while they do provide some aquatic habitat also leach various chemical in the water,  using your reasoning we should dump more tires and even better old stoves, refrigerators etc. into the streams.  Think I will stick with Harris and (gasp) Smalliebiggs.   on their version.

Removing "habitat" might be the case for some of the larger items, but most of the rest of that stuff I doubt gets used by anything. I have yet to see anything scurrying out of an old mud filled aluminum can, styrofoam cup, tire, piece of plastic chair, or can of chew tobacco that I picked up. Most of that either floats around and gets washed up on shore eventually, or gets filled in and covered over by silt and mud, like it never was there to begin with. Now, what the real harm in most of that stuff is to the fish, I don't exactly know. I imagine at least some of the coloring used in most of that stuff leaches into the water and has some bad side effects if nothing else. Some of the actual plastics I think also leach into the water and I think mimic molecules produced in animals. As far as the tires, I imagine they can do something more with them as far as recycling, seeing how they collect them separately.

As to the larger items, nowadays when they build those artificial reefs by sinking ships, they end up removing a ton of stuff considered to be detrimental, before actually sinking the thing. Asbestos insulation, piping where some type of fuel used to be, and who knows what else. I imagine they're doing it for a good reason. By that logic, I think most of the larger items in the river that do provide habitat nowadays, were, and/or still might be, causing close to as much detrimental effects as good ones.

I make it a point to remove trash everytime we go out. My kids used to see it as a chore, but now,  they do it without any provocation.   Now, I will never make the difference the stream teams do, but my kids will never be the ones contributing to the problem.  (At least I hope not).

Daryk, I wish I could like that comment more than once.  If we only things we accomplish is a small gesture and not making things worse great.  If we can install into our kids the importance of Natural Resources then the future is looking better and better.

As many federally listed species as there are in the meramec, and the bourb in particular, the chances the Feds would sign off on a dam are practically nil.  The COE couldn't, legally. 

 

The irony is it's a manufactured crisis, the result of dumb planning.  Theses food green-lit levees around Pacific and elsewhere, never acknowledging those project wouldn't dissipate floodwaters, just move them someplace else.

hahaha.....I guess screw it I'll start taking all my big items down to the ramp and start throwing them in to create some more habitat...I have an old Sanyo and a Honda mower I need to get out of my garage right now, I'm gonna drain the oil and throw that hunk of ~~ in there this evening....I need some new honey holes down there.

I need to quit polluting the Earth.....I may as well take a few shiots and piss in the river to get the nitrogen levels up in that river as well

Whether hiking, canoeing, camping, fishing, or hunting my Dad instilled in us at an early age to leave the area better than what you found it.  Picked up a lot of trash, sunken cans in the river, floating debris on the lake, trash left in the duck blinds on the CAs over the last 50 years.  Irritates me to no end to see trash up on the bank and a trash can 50 feet away.
