found a new bourbon the other day and like it a lot. Neat with some ice or 50/50 with sprite, Uncle Nearest.  Story has it that a former slave taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey. And they make a couple different ones. I got the 1884 small batch.

Another one I haven’t seen. Sooo many bourbons these days!

Also, so many craft beers that old classics are hard to find. Had a hankering for Chimay and couldn’t find any of the local stores. About two dozen US beers that claim to be that style, but I’m always reluctant to buy a six pack of an unknown. Had to venture out of the neighborhood today and found Chimay. It’s been so long I had to Google to remember the difference between their red, gold and blue. The blue is the one, and it’s tasting good tonight.

I guess I’ll take a crack at reviving this old thread.

We’ve been trying various ciders lately. A lot of the readily available US made ones are sickeningly sweet, so we’ve been trying some European ones.

I went to this massive liquor store today. That’s a story in itself. I found a few that we’ll offer for Thanksgiving, but we tried a couple tonight. Both are quite good. Very dry and full bodied.

This first one is a bone dry English cider with some tannin bitterness. Pretty darn good.

This second one is a perry or pear cider. This seemed better balanced to our taste. Good stuff.

Huh? Not too many days ago you told us this was poison. Told us all to stay away from it.

He’s sleeping it off 😂.   He’ll come up with some half hearted tale about how the “amateurs” made him do it.

💯  👍

Do as I say, not as I do !

Woke up at 6:am to pee and blow the snot out of my nose. Popped my right ear, and now I can't even walk a straight line.

It appears that realizing you're too old for that crap is worse than being amateurish.....since all of THEM are hopping around unhampered by it all.  🥴

Been in KY for a couple weeks.  Stopped in at a couple distilleries.   Got to fill and label my own bottle.

Learned a few things while here.  The label of "Bourbon"  is only able to be used if it was made in the USA.   Otherwise it is whiskey.  Bourbon barrels are only used one time.   Others reuse them for other drinks, and other uses.  But not for Bourbon.   There are typically only 3 ingredients.   Corn (at least 51%), rye, and malted barley.   Well 4 if you include the water.

When it is first brewed, it is clear and very strong. I forgot the exact proof we sampled, but it was very strong and tasted HOT!  The color comes from the barrel and the aging.  Depending on the location of the barrels and the temps in the rick house,  the whiskey colors may vary.

Here you can see the char from the bottom of the barrel we dispensed from.

We toured Teeling Irish whiskey in Dublin and they had this cool display. Left to right whiskey as it ages: change in color and lower level from evaporation. I believe the one on the right was 8 years old.

Sorry that we weren't able to get together when we were passing through KY. Looks like you are/were having some fun.

I have been on a tour of the Bushmills distillery in Northern Ireland. Absolutely loved being in the barrel/aging room breathing in the "angel's share"😉
