At my age you have to do this stuff just to maintain.

Well it sounds like you are putting in the time. Hard work always pays off. Keep up with it and glad to see that you are back on the water.

As far as the hook incident sorry to hear about that and the expense. I think there is a slogan or selling point in there somewhere........ "4 out of 5 ER Doctors recommend using Dave's Prescription Strength Ned Heads".

"correctly"

It's not like it's freaking difficult. There is a fraction of a second where there is a sone pressure and then the hook is out and it's back to fishing.

it hurts less to jerk it out than it does to leave it in there.

I save trips to the ER for bigger stuff than a fish hook.

I still carry a partial fish hook in my right calf since I was 15.

I've pulled out 5 treble hooks over the years. One time I was fishing alone at lake Avalon. It was raining hard & I was catching 1lb bass on crankbait on every cast. Eventually I did an MLF landing & the fish squirted thru my hands & buried a #4 gammy into my right ring finger. Right in the meat. I pinned the fish with my left knee & cut the split ring off. I tried to keep fishing because it was April & I already caught 35 dinks. That didn't last very long before I cranked up & started doing laps around the no wake lake. I was hoping somebody would come out yelling or call the warden. Didn't work. It was raining full down pour at this point & I see a father & son bank fishing. So I pull up & explain my situation to this guy & ask if he'll help me out. I could tell he was apprehensive. So I told him the bill Dance method. We rehearsed it a couple times until he got up enough courage to yank it out. On the 1st try he pulled real lightly & it hurt then. I was like, no tug, you gotta yank on it like starting your lawn mower. He looked at me like I had Lost my mind. So I gave him the evil eye & said I'm gonna count to three & you yank as hard as the you can. He gave me a double take & I started counting. When I said 3, he yanked so hard I saw the treble hook fly over the boat. I thanked him & he asked what the fish were biting. I cut off my crawdad crankbait that had already caught 35 & tied it on his pole. Hopefully he caught something afterwards, because I caugth another 30 keepers later that day when it slacked up a drizzle.

Now, I've had 1 unsuccessful attempt that involves a shaky head. It was August, it was hot & we were 2 miles from the take out on the Illinois river. My buddy in the back of the canoe managed to get hung up. He pulled the jighead loose & it rocketed straight into his calf. The 3/0 shaky head hook was buried up to the bend. We beached the canoe & got out in the blistering sun. I discussed the bill dance method with him. He looked at me sideways. I found some parachute cord because I didn't have anything heavier than 6lb spooled on the reels. I go to yank the hook out & it snatched the meat & skin instead of popping out. I don't know how he refrained from punching me in the face. His dad's a surgeon, so he asked for my pocket knife with a straight face. I was like Dude, for real? He took the knife & made a slit in his skin where he would later push the 3/0 hook thru. Once it was sticking out we had to use a pair of leathermans to try & cut the hook off. It was like cutting steel with a pair of needle nose. By this time my esteemed colleague was gritting his teeth & sweating profusely. After 20 grueling minutes of gravel bar surgery he cut the hook loose & pulled it back thru. I felt terrible for making things worse but it took place 2 miles from nowhere & it was the only option. Next time, cut the lead head off the hook shank & only use 1 strand of parachute cord.
