snagged in outlet 3
I tried for a whole summer one year and gave up. Never even got a tug. I think the water I fish is just too muddy. I could see them tailing and even had days when they were taking cottonwood fluffs off the surface. I had a CDC fly that looked just like the fluffs including the little seed in the middle. Nada, nutin, squadush, squatamala. Ham, BilletHead, Flysmallie and 1 other 3

Yeah after 2 years of periodically trying for carp and buffalo on the flats while waiting for the Whites to show up I finally mastered a technique for catching them fairly consistently. I call it "jerktailing". Just drop a 1/40oz. #4 clouser on top of him, wait 2.6 seconds and STRIP SET HARD. If you think they fight hard when hooked in the face.....you ain't seen nothing until you hook one in the tail. About one a day is all you'll want to deal with. Once found many carp working a small area next to shore. Tried about everything. They worked the surface and I think they were just sucking scum off the surface. Someone needs to tie a scum fly. About one a day is all you'll want to deal with. I hooked a 24+" common carp behind the dorsal fin with a small huskyjerk bait while fishing below Truman dam. I was using 4# line. I fought that fish for a good 5 to 6 minutes. I would get it close to the rocks and it would pull line as it went back out to the middle. Really hard to control the fish. Finally I pulled the hook as it got close. I would have loved to have landed this fish, but more than anything just wanted to keep my bait. Geoff
bring a fork and be prepared to have a nice piece of humble pie, served up hot. They are very good at delivering that, but once you make contact and land your first one, they will eat away at your brain and drive you into an obsessive addict for catching them. i gave up on a smallmouth stream because i found a school of carp and completely 180* switched my focus Flysmallie, Johnsfolly, BilletHead and 1 other 4 "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all." blacknoseddace
Stalking carp with a fly rod in clear water is where it's at. It's challenging, but the most enjoyable way to catch them for me. You get to watch em' eat it, then set the hook. If you find areas where carp are concentrated in clear, shallow water you have a target rich environment.
