Is this the right post? I didn't see you mention where you actually saw the boat committing the act, just that another boat was putting in who you didn't think was the culprit. Itt was in September and goes along with what you said here for the most part.

gigging is a tradition true enough... you should have to do it with ancient tech... wood torches...make your own raft or canoe....atl atl only with locust thorn gig....and no modern warm clothes ether..furs and buckskins.....and you have to get to the stream with a horse or wagon or better yet on foot.........then its awesome

And you need to fish for your trophy carp with a stick and cordage you have woven from natural materials.

let me ask everyone...do you think some people don't gig gamefish?...better yet how many suckers get gigged and released because a bigger one gets gigged?...20 fish limit...how many people have limited out in an hour? and yet they are out all night....makes you think

I am not the one touting "special rules" because its a tradition.....blackpowder and archery....if the guns were like an 1867 hawkins or

It's clearly obvious you are clueless when it comes to gigging. Only a turd would purposely gig game fish and I don't know of a single person who would pass up suckers to do that. If any of the people that I know who gig saw something like that, there would probably be some words exchanged and physical confrontation with the poachers. Giggers want suckers to eat because they are delicious and gigging is far more effective at quickly getting enough for a fish fry that rod and reel fishing. Smaller suckers are the better eating. Most would rather have a limit of foot long suckers over a bunch of big redhorse simply because they are easier to clean and fry up crispier. Very few times does a boat get their full limit. Not to say it isn't possible and it would be easy to go over if you really were trying for a full boat limit, but most tend to go out and kill enough for the evening. Cleaning suckers is the worst part so staying up all night doing that kind of ruins the fun. If you kill just enough to fry up that evening, then you can go back out and do it all over again.

No I didn't see anyone committing the act, I only saw dead gigged fish all over the bottom of the river for 3-4 miles upstream from Barclay.    If I had seen them I'd have a REALLY COOL story to tell, and probably a court date coming up real soon.

perhaps its because the section of river is gigged out..it seems I need to post the videos on just how fast a limit is reached, granted they are experienced giggers but it would make my point

not everyone keeps suckers to clean and eat... I have seen a big pile of sucker dumped by the side of the road, ramp or bridge...we all have....

 

IMHO Gigging's time has come and gone just like punt guns for ducks...a few "turds" have ruined the fun for the giggers who are not game hogs...its one reason we are losing access because one way to effect change is get rid of your ability to reach large sections of river....next will be to ban jet boats because of erosion.....you heard it here 1st

So from the viewpoint of an enforcement person, you saw that an apparent (obvious) illegal act had been perpetrated by someone, you have no description, no other information.  That is good information for an Agent to have and keep an eye on the area and maybe do some more checks, however it is hardly the sort of evidence that will allow them to rush to the area and make an arrest.  As Seth said, I know of nobody who goes gigging g to fill a freezer, they/we go to get enough fish to fry for the group, not uncommon for one or two to stay on the gravel bar, build a fire, and have everything ready.  Also nobody who has eaten both a smallmouth and a sucker is going to intentionally take a smallie, trout, or LM over sucker.
