Yep -- I spent some time in the cave, but it was mostly south and east of where I am. Tornado in Belton, which is south, but little damage. Some big trees down around town.

The cave? You mean that fly tying sweatshop where you force the girlfriend to make wooly buggers?

Green thumb related...

Sugarbritches decides that she wants this little tree moved from across the road to the front yard.  Didn't look like a big deal, and I'm always looking to rack up some brownie points, so I said "Sure Babe, I'll dig it up this evening".    So after 2 carb jobs, a gearcase rebuild, and a complete service on a 115 Merc 4-stroke and the toon it was hanging on I grabbed a sharp-shooter and waded into Ticktown to uproot this little MF'er.

Well who knew that the root system on such a "sprout" was going to be 3 times the size of the tree?   And since I can't even drive a tent stake anywhere on my property it wasn't long until I was ready to bail on this promised project.   So as I'm standing there with sore hand bones, seed ticks crawling towards my balls, and knowing that once this little POS was unearthed I still had yet another hole to dig in the yard to plant it,  I thought "this is rediculous, I have a badass 4x4 and a tow strap....just get the stupid tree for crying out loud".  So I loosened up the dirt/rocks, threw 3 half hitches around the base with the tow strap, hit the 4Low button and gave it the old country boy tug.

Well, the strap skinned the bark off the tree pretty good, but by God I finished the job.   The Princess is NOT very happy. 😒

Do you think it will live ?

You should have hired a biologist to move the tree . If there is not a continuous strip of bark from the roots to the leaves, that tree is going to die. if it does live it will not be very pretty for a long time since most of the branches will die back without adequate nutrient flow from the roots.

Ok well, since we're going BIOLOGIST on this then we have something new to study.  Sounds like I have your approval for funding,so here goes....

I'll begin the paper trail and records immediately.

5/2/2018 Relocation:

Shovel =75.00, Truck=14,000.00, Fuel=16.50, Staff=274.80, Band-Aids= 6.25, Insect repellent=8.35

5/3/2018 Monitoring:

Staff=(look at tree) 67.50, Take photo of tree and measure=135.70,. Talk about tree=432.09 (consultation on OAF Gardening thread).

Prognosis of tree as of 1:35pm 5-3-2018 is questionable, but tree appears to be doing fine, no loss of buds or leaves at this time.

Cost as of 2:00pm 5-3-2018 = $15,026.19

Is this not how they operate ?  Note the generosity of not charging for the tow strap.  You're welcome.

I'll have to reject your charge for the bug spray, sir.  You admitted the little rascals were crawling towards your berry's so clearly you didn't use any.

Other than that, everything looks in order.  Please continue to monitor the tree until it dies and then write up your findings for the Mo Conservation magazine.  With said pictures of course.

Noted. In that case we'll have to allow 27.43 for the tow strap, and 13.92 for Black Mulch which is to be placed over the disturbed soil on the next rain free day.

Budget correction: 15,069.19 -8.35 +27.43 +13.92 = $15,102.19

Thank you, Biological Redbud bark damage study staff.

Anyplace that has redbuds near a major building will have several sprouting up among the creek gravel mulch stuff.  Put them in a big pot for a year or two and then plan them wherever you want.  I had to brush hog a bunch of them things about that size or a little bigger.  Amazes me how they can become and invasion force in the right circumstances.  I too am always looking for brownie points in order to get a smiling thumbs up to go fishing.
