Johnsfolly Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Eels are extremely underrated in terms of extent of their migrations. It amazes me how far they go to live and to spawn. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
Quillback Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 I saw a documentary about eels a few years ago, maybe on PBS, I can't remember where. But they are in high demand in Asia as food, and what was happening is that the little eels that were returning to the east coast were being netted and shipped to Japan to be raised to adult size and then on to the frying pan. The price was pretty good for those baby eels, some people were making pretty good money catching them. Downside was the population was effected.
tjm Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 I saw on another forum that elvers were worth an average of $2369 per pound this year to Maine commercial fishers. South Carolina is, I believe the only other state that has a commercial elver fishery. The Asians consider them an aphrodisiac. http://www.maine.gov/dmr/science-research/species/eel-elver/factsheet.html

Quillback Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Yep, it was Maine rivers that documentary showed them being netted in. Hate to see that kind of value placed on them, seems it always leads to poaching and overfishing.
dan hufferd Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 When I was a kid I found several in the Finnly river. I am not sure what species but they were many and concentrated in certain areas.

Ham Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 Now, I want to hit the Osage with worms for eels. How long ago? Time of year? Day or night? I need to catch at least one. dan hufferd 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
snagged in outlet 3 Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 Caught plenty in the Mississippi while catfishing. Right by the Golden Eagle Ferry.
