Fishing kayak.

I just purchased a SOT fishing kayak. Was looking at dicks sporting goods they had one for about 500 +. The fella actually told me it’s half priced at Walmart. Sure enough it was. It’s a lifetime tamarack. Don’t know how well it works but excited to try it out. If I don’t like the kayak experience I’m only out 250.

Perception Pescador. Is the best value. Great boat; low price. 

Bargin boats usually aren’t a great boat only a low price.

It might not last one trip. I’ve never fished out of a kayak so I wasn’t going to spend 1000 on something I may not even like. I don’t get to fish often and am always wading or in a jet. Was figuring a kayak would be nice on the small creeks and rivers I normally wade but can pack a lunch and more gear than just wading. What makes a $1000 worth the difference?

Nothing wrong with the Lifetime kayaks. My daughters have them. Nothing fancy, but they float just fine. Congrats! I'm sure you will have some fun with it.

I have one. It's a cheap one that everyone tried to steer me clear of.

I have spent a fair amount of time in it and here is what I think.

• 12 foot is better than 10. I like to keep all my rods laying in front of me for quick access. Rods sticking up out of the air is only going to work in open water. 
• I like sitting down closer to the water. Learned to bass fish from a float tube so it seems pretty natural to me.
• I also have a canoe for camping trips.
• I don't ever try to stand in mine. I'm fine just sitting there.
• I find that getting out of and into a canoe is much easier for me. Old, fat, and bad knees from chasing quarterbacks many, many years ago makes it hard to get down there with your feet out in front of you.
• Much better at still water than any canoe. Yeah the canoe is faster but sucks in the wind and is much, much harder to hold in position. I am fishing so I'm not in any big hurry.
• Yes they are heavy but I see a bunch of you studs carrying those fashionable coolers that weigh 20 lbs empty. Man up and throw that up on top of the car, or in the bed of the truck or a trailer. lighter don't mean better.

These are just my opinions. I don't expect anyone to agree so please don't be insulted when I don't see your side. You know, the ones that never fish from one. 

You make some good points, right in there between your snarky bookends. Not exactly trail-blazing info -- it's all been covered here before -- in this thread or others or about a thousand places elsewhere. Except the part about quarterbacks.

For the record -- for you and Marty -- I'm not against kayaks and I'm not knocking what anybody has chosen. As a matter of fact I do think it would be a pretty fun craft to mess around with on the water. There are always pros and cons to everything, and we all know there's never a perfect do-everything-well solution. But I can research and noodle and read and cipher, and make an informed decision for me and my unique set of circumstances without spending ANY time on a fishing kayak. I know what I have already, what I drive (SUV), what space I've got, how many sheckles I've got in the bank, how often I'm likely to use it and a whole bunch of other factors that are unique to me. I mentioned a couple specifics that are important to me, and others I'm sure -- weight and portability. I have watched a friend try to wrestle a Jackson onto some racks above his pickup. It changed me forever.

So let the pros and cons speak for themselves. And take my comments as a couple data points, among all the others, that some folks may want to consider.

I heard you when you typed why you thought people were gravitating towards yacks not if they are good or not. Those two boys can’t hear what you typed. 😁

If you just wanted to try one, I’m sure you could have arranged a float with an OA guy and used their boat at No Charge. 

Pescadors can be purchased for a lot less than $1000. Probably twice the price of a cheap boat and I believe they are a quality product that would paddle better, store gear better, and fish better. And if stored properly, serve you well for 10 years or more. 

Im not trying to push someone into spending mote than they can afford, but rather buy at a really good price break point. Like many things there is a point of diminishing returns where you are spending a lot more with little demonstrable benefit. Pescador gets you a lot for a little more than bargain basement and if you hated it after a few trips, you could have sold it for $100 less than you paid for it.

  Hey man besides your thoughts on why they were popular you also said YOU thought they were cumbersome and heavy. 

  And both Ronnie and I agreed canoes have their place when transporting loads. And I am still open for you to try since you have never been in one. Nobody is trying to change your mind friend. At least I wasn't.
