Heading to Orange Beach/Gulf Shores, AL area in Mid March. Would like to try my hand fishing the surf on the beach. I really don’t want to deal with live/fresh bait. Wanting to throw lures only.

What can I expect that time of year? What lures would be effective? What kind of species should I expect/target.

I’d love to get into a bull red if possible but I honestly don’t care what I catch. Just looking for some Tackle/Bait suggestions and how to approach surf fishing.

I appreciate any info you guys are able to share!

Grew up fishing there

bull reds and specks typically, but anything is possible as one offs

might hit the pier, going out a half day charter isn’t too pricy ether grouper and Cobia gets started then, gulp crabs work as good as bait somethings always biting just pay attention to the tides..,,incoming tides best shore casting, lots of options,

this guy is an expert at everything.  Surf fishing, caviar, selling catfish, carp stealth fishing, bow fishing....... you name it and he knows it.  Plus he has lived everywhere and done everything. What a resource to have available......:O_O:

Had luck with a gotcha plug in the morning from the beaches.  Little suckers are heavy so you can really wing them out there and then a jerky fast retrieve back in.  Never fished that particular beach but other gulf areas.  Mostly whiting and lady fish.  I've yet to land a big red.  I hooked into a few but never got them to hand... That was using live sand fleas though.  My girls are my bait catchers LOL.

I fished the  surf along the Texas coast for many years. Best lure for speckled trout was always a 52M series Mirrolure. My favorite color was red/gold sides. I think the actual model was 52M28 (28 being the color scheme). Cast it as far as you can and work it back like a jerk bait.

My kids used to watch a movie that reminds me of MoCrap. It was called Big Fat Liar.

I mostly fly fish when I’m down there but a Johnson Sprite spoon is a pretty fun bait to fling from the beach and it will catch anything. Find some cuts and you will get plenty of action.
