Watching some videos lately... always dangerous...  I am thinking about getting a few big swimbaits (dangerous for the pocketbook I know).  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with throwing large swimmers at the rock and any advice on where I should look if I wanted to add a few to the arsenal...

Any thoughts on styles (soft body, line through, hard body)?  What about rod/line set up recommendations?

I found some older threads on here that talked about the R2S S-Waver 200.  But I have not seen any recent discussions.

I  have used and caught fish on the 5",7" and 9" Storm WildEye Shad.  There are 10 million soft swimbaits to chose from and i would not spend any money on them till I threw the WildEye for a while.  They are cheap and WILL catch fish.

Beck and I caught 25 pounds on them we used the 5 and 7 in a derby quite a few years ago, the first week of June.  They are a post spawn bait for sure.

Good luck

I've got some S-wavers and some spro bbz-1. I throw them here and there but success has been limited. Like others some good looks but nothing earth shattering. I always try and target ambush points. Think large shallow boulders, shallow bluff edges, areas where I might throw a topwater over open water or timber, docks, ect.

You get a heck of a splat with a bbz-1 or 168 or 200 swaver when the lure hits so I try to make mile long casts well past anything I'm targeting.

This one works, if you can find it. On advice of one of the Bull Shad guys, I throw it on a Dobyns Fury swimbait rod, 25# mono. IMG_20171208_132148322.jpg

That one is actually the 4x4, kind of a big square bill. The one I prefer is the wake version. Both work, slightly different thickness and lips. The wake bait floats.1228181933b-1746x2328.jpg

I'll usually throw a hand poured swimbait with a owner beast hook.  I have some really big baits that are hand pours 8" or so but the profile on hand pours is outrageous.  I typically only throw those at Lake Fork when I go.  I have been throwing a 5" hand pour that has worked decently well.  You get bit often enough to have some confidence in it and will upsize your catch a little.  I like throwing it over deep trees or bluff ends.  I throw them on a 7'11" Powell Endurance heavy cranking rod.  15# flouro around her. Below is the pic of them.

Also forgot to add.  Get some Storm lead strips to wrap around the hook on the belly so it keels right.  The beast hook also comes weighted I believe but I don't like how fast it falls.  That whole setup is weedless so run it through the trees.

I like the glide baits and wake baits. Personally prefer the Savage Gear Shine Glide over the S Waver. I like the profile better and it glides easier imo. Moves a lot of fish around docks and they'll come a long ways to eat it. The 185 (7ish inch) size is my favorite. An MS Slammer can be a really fun bait too. Some of the most violent strikes you'll ever see.
