tjm Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 So the leader's main purpose is as sacrificial break away?
moguy1973 Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 I'd say I"m right on the 50yd distance I stated above, maybe a little less, but with my newest set up which is a carbonlite rod and a Lew's pro tournament reel with 30lb braid I've made it from the dock to the corner of the lake shown below with a whopper plopper 90. snagged in outlet 3 and dan hufferd 2 -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

That's awesome ! I tried to do that google measurement thing too, I use it for shooting coyotes near the house, but couldn't get it to work, on my pc this time. Anyway thanks, I am still very new at this it sounds like 40 to 50 is a normal thing with the right bait.

Click that and then the end point you want to measure to. Al Agnew Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Well...I'm pretty sure I could get 50 yards with just a 1/2 ounce lead sinker, which is far less wind-resistant than the lure I was casting to get the 34 yards. Probably more than that, especially with one of my longer rods that I can cast two-handed. Just don't see the need to do so, but I suppose there are situations where it might be necessary, and yep, braid makes it possible to cast that far and still get some kind of hook set--forget it with mono. Just like to repeat something else that's been said here...I see absolutely no reason to fill up a spool with good line. Like the others, I put old or cheap line on until the spool is filled about halfway, then add what ends up being 60-75 yards of the good stuff. Braid...great on spinning reels. It's all I ever use. Not that it doesn't twist, but twist doesn't affect braid like it does mono, so you have far fewer problems with it. And I never use a leader--never saw the need for it with the usual braid I use, which is 2/10 or 4/15 Power Pro. And I don't want to worry about another knot that might fail. I don't use it on casting reels except for one reel.
fishinwrench Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 I didn't read all of this, but I can bounce a 1/2oz. Red-eye Shad off of Jupiter with an old 4600C. Never once have I gotten a bite there though. Freakin' Gar Hole!
Old plug Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 I still would have to see( with me standing there watching it and measuring itI to believe it. My son is a Surf fisherman. His rod is 12ft long. I know what 50 yards is. I mow it a couple times a week. It does not matter really. There is a old saying 90% of the fish or caught by 10% of the fishermen. On LOZ you can bet that 10% are real good at flipping and pitching. What would be the practical fishing purpose of it anyway sneaking up on the fish??? I do not think so. I caught a 5Lb bass last week and he never got any further than 15 ft from my boat except when he was making a run.
