Extended gigging season.

If someone has figured out how to pick up a radio signal from a submerged fish with a roof-mounted antenna they ought to share that how-to with the US Navy. I'm sure they'd be really interested. Fish chasers using radio-telemetry have to shove an antenna in the water, take directional and signal strength readings and move until they find the target.

Everybody cries about the smallies getting stabbed, but many trout get gigged also.  I was fly fishing below Montauk down by the turd ponds one nice fall day.  This family of hoosiers came dragging a 12' boat up stream from Tan Vat.  The women folk, at least they looked female in a crude sort of way,  were all in the boat and the males were pulling and pushing the boat.  They beached the boat, dropped the women off, then took the boat back in the hole.  Some thru rocks to drive the fish toward the boat and yes, there was a trout stabbed, but let go.  Good ole Missouri Catch and Release.  Quite the circus.

I notified local warden, told me that was all legal, move along, nothing to worry about.  As long as they stay below the wire.

Yep, I called and reported a rediculous number of stabbed trout laying on the bottom just upstream of Barclay on the Niangua.  A family I know lives just up the road from there and I asked them to let me know if a MDC truck went by in the near future.   About 4 days later a crew pulling a trailer with a mower went by.....but nothing else.   

The MDC truly doesn't care.   I just don't get it.   I know there probably isn't anything they could have done about a crime that had already been committed, but was hoping at least they would see with their own eyes that THIS STUFF HAPPENS and they would quit ignoring it.  Nope, it was more important to them to just cut the grass.

In short, the south zone line is wack. It goes more or less straight across the state then takes a hard turn south to appease “somebody” then turns abruptly north again. The new north zone is pretty screwed up too. Somebody certainly had influence over those lines and it wasn’t geography or science.

I had thought the zones were set primarily by when the birds arrived in a place. No point in me having an early season if the closest duck in in Iowa. Noyt knowing better I had thought the ducks on the Mississippi route just moved south sooner. And i had thought the boundaries  sorta follow roads and without investigating it thought that turn back was just where a road changed direction. Never would have suspected that anyone would want to tamper with a zone just get a few days earlier or later season.  I'll have to study on how that works, maybe I could have this county set into a spring migration season- we seem to have more ducks late than early. Wonder who to contact for something like that? You have any idea how big a bribe to offer?

Most ducks fly south in early November, right when they shut down for deer season.  South zone still closed for that migration. Then mallards come down as stuff freezes up north late Dec about the time middle zone closes.

The zones follow roads as reference points, but have no real bearing on migration.

Illinois has an early and a late season that works better with the migration pattern above.  But alot depends on weather each year.
