Heading to the great white north tomorrow

In the morning I'll be heading to Pashkokogan Lake in the middle of nowhere Ontario for 10 days (minus the 4 days of driving) of fishing for walleye and pike.  I've never caught a walleye in my life and only one pike when I was about 12.  I'm pretty excited to add another species of fish to the ones I've caught.  I have no clue how to fish for them but the guys I'm going with have done this for almost 20 years or so, so I'm guessing I'll pick it up pretty quickly.  I have spinner rigs, and bottom bouncers, and small curly tail grubs, and jerk baits, and crank baits, and spinner baits, and flicker shad, and rattle traps for the walleye.  I have big spoons and big topwater baits for the pike.  Hopefully one of those things is what they are wanting.  There's really limited internet and cell coverage up there but I'll be sure to add to this when I can with some pictures of the area and hopefully some fish.

For walleyes, vertical jigging is productive once you find them (I'm not a fan of random trolling).  1/8 or 3/16 oz jighead tipped with plastics (4" ringworms in root beer color, Berkley PowerBait Ripple Shad in white work great, sometimes Gulp! minnows work really well).  For pike, larger plastic swimbaits on bigger Owner jigheads....make sure you have a steel or titanium leader.  The titanium leaders are more expensive, but they won't kink like the steel ones.  You can try big topwaters for pike too when they are over shallow flats or near weeds.

Got here late last night but it to get out for a couple hours and caught my first walleye ever. And then caught my first keeper walleye ever at about 20” long.  Then today we got out and had a beautiful day and ended up with something like 13 keeper walleye and 3 keeper northern pike. I did catch a 33” slot sized pile and my brother in law caught a 37” pike we threw back. Caught them on big spoons, big swim baits, spinner rigs on bottom bouncers and curly tailed jigs. Had a big pike follower on a jerk bait but he saw the boat before taking it.

Jerkbaits work very well up there for Northerns. Throw big topwater a too.

I did catch a small pike on a musky whopper plopper lure I have but we have mostly been trolling with spoons, jigs, and bottom bouncers so it’s hard to really work a jerk bait and top water.

Didn't have the numbers today but had the big ones biting.  Caught a 36" pike that went 20+ lbs.  Finger got in the way in the picture though. Ooops.
