Guess we are going to raise Shiitake Mushrooms. My wife has Spore ordered and some Logs coming that are solid but seasoned. 3 foot long so I can handle them.

Going to try soilless gardening.

Good luck on the shitakes. Fun to grow. Though I prefer the homegrown oysters myself.

I always just use my hat.  Maybe that's what's wrong with me.....fungus spores too close to my brain.

If you're using a hat, you're not finding enough.

I'm not a good mushroom spotter.  Only once have I found more than my hat would hold, and that happened to be under a stand of cedar trees.  That experience ruined me because now when I'm out looking for morels and I notice cedars off in the distance I HAVE TO go look.     I probably step on a hat full on my way to the stupid cedars. 🙄

I grew exactly 3 shitakes after a lot of work on a dang log.  But they were tasty.  My system to find morels is to wander the woods, and end up throwing my walking stick, then I look real carefully around it.  Then I fund a comfy spot and sit down and usually fall asleep, when I wake up and eventually remember where I am I go home with a few and claim I have walked miles.

Are they better eating?

Oyster shelf mushrooms are great.  I'm going to grow them too.

According to the class I attended, logs are best two weeks to three months after being cut in late fall through early spring.  It's actually getting late now to cut them for this year.  If they're very old they are more likely to have already been colonized by a species you don't want.  And split logs are no good at all.  The bark is very important.  Helps to retain moisture which is essential for successful cultivation.
