I wonder if the explosion in online shopping and home deliveries in recent years sucks up so many CDL drivers that it's more of a driver issue than a truck issue?

Its 2 fold in my opinion. One is that driving isn't a job cut out for everyone. Long periods away from family is hard. With the economy what it was many people that resorted to driving were able to find jobs that paid marginally close to what they made before.

2nd is the E-log stuff. I know 2 drivers who both have quit driving due to e-logs. I don't understand but hear through the grapevine that its a nightmare with mandatory shutdowns/restricted hours.

E log cut a lot of drivers out.  Trucks literally quit running when they hit the quota.  Lots of old timers quit.  I would have trucks show up way early on job sites and simply couldn't believe they drove that far without stopping.  Not anymore.  We have more companies pick up with their own trucks to avoid E log wait times.

Again this is only second hand knowledge but both these guys ran reefer and they complained about E-log and getting loaded/unloaded in reasonable times meant they set without getting paid until their time was up.

Yep we pay wait time all the time.  Anything past 2 hours.  Another thing was no longer bribing drivers.  If your job site is shut down waiting for some temp shoring or something unplanned and you are paying crane and crew it gets expensive real quick.  We would book the trucks and the contractor would want the driver's phone number "to give him directions into the job site"

I drove years ago a my Logs never matched what hours I put in. I remember 12 hours to load I put down 15 minutes.

Made good money and would drive maybe 3 days and nights none stop. You get too tiered to go you stopped and slept.

For awhile I was putting in thousand miles a day that was when speed limit was 55. You figure it out.

And that mentality is partly the fault of people like me who tend to defend LE across the board and have enabled that attitude, but it has to change or Change will be shoved down their throats in a manner they will not like.  It is simply a fact that it cannot continue lie it is without change, preferable from wirhin, but if not then from the outside.  If they are smart the LE unions etc will begin to implement some sort of community review board that makes reccomendations and or does minor investigations and either refers it to he Internal Affairs or whatever dept is in place to handle it.  Many departments have a community review board but I have no idea exactly what they actually do or if they have any refrral capability.

I was just at the office watching a video of what we do. They are trying to cut our funds but watching the video got me to thinking about cost of Equipment and Training just to help people. No arresting or enforcing the laws just helping our fellow man in times of trouble.
