ness Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 I was rooting around in the basement, cleaning a bit and organizing but also getting some stuff pulled together to do a quick bank fishing trip with one of my sons today. Came across an old Pfleuger medalist my dad handed down to me in the mid-90s when I first got into fly fishing. Got to thinking about things on this Father's Day, including some of the treasures that were handed down to me. Thought I'd get a thread started on the topic. So, show us what you've got. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, but hopefully something that has meaning for you. Here's the Medalist: The rod I'm going to use us an old, tip heavy Orvis Rocky Mountain 5-weight my dad bought for me. Haven't fished it in years until today. Here’s a picture from about 11 years ago. My 2 sons with 2 guns handed down from my dad. They’ll each get one when I go tits up. So, Happy Father's Day to all the dads. And dig it out, take a pic and share it. BilletHead, snagged in outlet 3, ColdWaterFshr and 2 others 5 John
snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 Kind of ashamed really. He passed away and my brothers and I spent a whole day sorting his equipment and splitting it up. We had a great time. All the guns and rods have been stored away since that day. Everything from a custom 2 weight bamboo fly rod to to an old pump action 22 still new in the box. In fact half the fly rods have never been wet. He had a knack of winning drawings at events so he had a bunch of brand new fly rods and reels. ness, nomolites, laker67 and 1 other 4
Flysmallie Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 I can’t think of anything tangible. Sure I have some of his guns but that wasn’t a huge part of our lives. I’ve got some fishing stuff but none of it sentimental really. I guess the best thing he left me is a monkey dodo-ton of good memories. If it came to fishing he found a way to make it happen. I grew up in south Oklahoma and most of our fishing was farm ponds. He loved to fish from a float tube. I think he started taking me in a float tube when I was 7 or 8. I was incapable of keeping up so he tied a long rope between us and just drug me behind him. Float tubes are already a workout and now he’s dragging me along. That only lasted part of a summer and then I was on my own. And if I got left behind then I was just left behind. We moved to Missouri half way through my junior year in high school. He bought a boat and then when I took a liking to tournaments he bought a nicer boat and paid for all my expenses. He took me fishing in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and Mexico. We spent a lot of time in Texas between Fork and Falcon. Plus he made sure that I caught a double digit bass and was right there when it happened. He was also the reason that I lost one that would make that one look like a baby. But it was a hilarious chain of events that was more hysterical than sad. My dad gave me a fishing life that many never have the chance to experience. Some of the best memories of my life happened in a boat with my dad. And he was just happy sitting in the back of the boat, eating crackers, drinking beer, and watching me fail and succeed. snagged in outlet 3, Terrierman, Johnsfolly and 4 others 7
fishinwrench Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Oh gosh, so much stuff. I'll refrain from hogging this thread and just show off the stuff that means the most. The first is a double-whammy, his dad gave it to him....then him to me. The second is another double-whammy. My Papaw's Thompson model A I went rotary for awhile, but then gave the Renzetti away and went back to using the 3rd generation Thompson. It's currently on it's 5th or 6th set of jaws. The last goes with me everywhere I go. This swivel.... held this Middle fork Salt river cat, and my dad saved it for me. The first biggun I ever landed by myself. That's my brother and I. I couldn't lift it 😅 Thanks ol'man. You hard assed ol'softy nomolites, ness, Seth and 6 others 8 1
jdmidwest Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Dad is still kicking, but he passed me a Herters Bamboo he never used a few years ago. My grandparents left me an old S W Pistol, Remington .244, Marlin 30-30, and a couple of other guns. I have some beekeeping veils, and various stuff from my Maternal Grandpa. And lots of memories of both. I had a Great Uncle that was special, I have a Herters Bamboo from him and several old glass bait casting rods. Knives and misc other memories of him. My Uncle that really taught me how to shoot and reload, I have many of his old things. My best friends Dad gave me a knife he made, handle of deer that I harvested and several old decoys. I spent alot of time fishing with him while his sons were away at Med School. They all have a place in my special memories. ness, ColdWaterFshr, laker67 and 1 other 3 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. ColdWaterFshr Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Grandad Arnold's old desk, and then my uncle's old desk which he used to build amazing model planes on. Now I tie shite flies on. The Japanese flag came from my Granddads service in WWII in the Philippines. laker67, fishinwrench, ness and 1 other 4
