Inlines kill deer and technically they are muzzle loaders, but to me they have nothing to do with black the powder experience.  It may be a thing like fishing flies with a fly line or fishing flies with casting gear, crossbow versus long bow kind of perspective. And like designating water to be fly fishing only and then allowing casting gear, it seems stupid to me to designate the deer seasons into sub-categories  and then fudge the definitions to allow other sub-categories. I'd be happy just let all the segments of deer season run together  and pick what ever means you want to use.

One drawback to the inlines for me is getting that primer down in that little hole with my large stiff fingers.

They make tools for the primers that make inserting them easy.  I use a speedloader system.

The original seasons were for "primitive methods".  I hunted percussion for years.  Even shot a doe with a rifle and finished her with a Hawken Pistol.  I always carry a sidearm.  Took one with a 357 revolver one year.   I resisted inlines for years, never saw the need for one.  Then the newer shotgun primer ones came out and I bought one.  Light and tack driver when loaded right.  Fun to shoot.

The addition of the America Rifle in a pistol format has led to another venture.  I have not taken a deer with one of them and plan to do so this year.  Just another challenge to try.

But it's legal for me to use the Hawken during 30-30 season and it's not legal for me to use the 30-30 during Hawken season and that makes no sense. Like I said run one season from Sept thru Jan. and use all tools. The limiting factor for management is inevitably the number of permits allowed, and the total number can remain the same.

Inlines are just single shot rifles. Shooting a deer at 200+ yards with one isn’t anything crazy. Dad has a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag pistol that I have thought about trying to harvest a deer with, but I always end up taking the muzzleloader or bow.

I have a Knight DISC 50, older Muzzleloader, in-line, accurate, killed several deer with it.  No longer much good to me and new shoulder though.

And they are fun to shoot.  And they are easier to clean up by orders of magnitude than a traditional muzzleloader.  Also, the results are quick clean, and sometimes spectacular kills as long as the operator has done the legwork up front to validate the loading.

They can also be operated with lead slugs without sabots, black powder, and iron sights.  I have used mine out west where that is the requirement and while it surely limits their range, they will take elk, deer, or other game swiftly and cleanly.

I love that cloud of smoke and when it clears often seeing my target anchored in its tracks.
