English degree?  What are they going to do with that??  Become a professor??  🤭

My daughter has an English degree and is making good money. Plus she has her summers off. It’s not always about the degree, sometimes it’s about the person that holds it.

I think one of the biggest problems we have in this country is we decided to start judging happiness by income. Then you end up with a bunch of kids going into fields that they have no interest in. People should strive for their kids to be happy and let them work out the rest. Don’t worry, nobody will look down on you if your kid doesn’t come out of college in 3 years making 100k.

The job market has always, and always will be, good with the right set of knowledge, skills and abilities. That's a "wherever you go, there you are" type of statement.

You're young and it's all you've seen.  But that's just not a true statement.

You might say I have a chip on my shoulder for liberal BS….always on the lookout. It’s so transparent anymore. I’m constantly asking my daughter what her professors are teaching her. Then I add my thoughts for her to think about. So many movies have an underlying Marxist theme…I’m the victim, you owe me. Unless conservatives stand up, we are doomed. The Marxist agenda used to be very insidious, after the Obama era it’s absolutely out in the open. They don’t even try to hide the BS anymore. I’m always watching

Something needs to be cut, the cost of education is outrageous. I don’t mind cutting football either.

It's kind of embarassing to see who the highest paid public employee is in nearly every state.

The thing is, 17-18 year olds aren't known for exceptional forethought. You get a lot of students that find out partway through a degree that it's not for them, that job prospects are actually garbage instead of what they were told, or will not pay their debt in a reasonable amount of time. The end result is a student debt crisis.

I would also venture to guess that a significant percentage of that age group really do not actually have a good idea of what they want to do with their life. I know that a lot of my classmates were really only in school to be doing something productive, that was even a lot of the reason I was there. I should've just went to work for a couple years and got a plan together, instead of wasting time and money, hindsight being what it is. All I was told is "you're smart, go to school", and if you don't go now, you never will.

Some are driven enough to have a good plan from the start and stick to it, which is very admirable, but it doesn't seem to be the majority in reality.

A lot of young people just are not ready for college straight out of high school.

The luckiest thing that ever happened to me was going to USMC instead of college out of high school.  Taught me a lot about self discipline, motivated me to not be a common laborer and got me the G.I. bill to help me get through college debt free.  I'd like to say I planned it that way but honesty won't let me.  Pure luck and hardheaded 18 year old mentality.  Had I gone to college straight out high school, 90 to nothing I would have become a dropout.

Two years of public service with tuition benefits afterwards would be a federal college tuition assistance program I would 100% support.

Same here, except I went the US Army route.  If I had gone straight to college it would've been wasted on me.  GI bill paid my tuition, I'd average 9-12 hours a semester, took me 6 years to get my 4 year degree, worked full time while going to school.

I know a gal that got divorced at age 30 or so, had 2 young girls to take care of, had no job market skills but went to nursing school, got her nursing degree, worked for a while and decided to become a Nurse Practitioner and is now making well over $100k/year.

I firmly believe that anyone that has the desire and drive can still create a pathway to a good job/career for themselves.  It may not be easy, there will be challenges and obstacles, but you just got to overcome them and get it done.

I hope it's a two-way street.  I hope she's able to add her own thoughts, and question yours.  It sounds like a great opportunity to learn from your daughter, too.  I hope you're making space for that.  I hope you're taking advantage of the opportunity.

.....sure Alabama was a space race hub at one point. Doesn't mean they all went to the University of Alabama.

Just like SpaceX isn't full of rocket engineers from UCLA necessarily.

She’s invited me to listen in on her virtual webinars, it has been nice. She only stayed 2 months in Minneapolis and then was allowed to stay home and do class virtually. She goes back in the fall for her sophomore year.
