As Quillback said, the act of traveling gets old really fast. I work for a corporation as my main gig and I traveled a LOT before Covid. Seeing and experiencing new places was fun (most of the time), but the travel itself is just annoying.

I started caring less about my job, in a way where I still do good work but don't sweat anything, when another PM here passed away unexpectedly in May. His email was erased in four days and he was replaced in 6. They do not care about me, and every single person is replaceable. So, why put too much into it? At the end of the day, if I want to fish, hunt, or drink whiskey on my back porch while running a client go-live on a Sunday night at 7:51 pm, then I am going to do it.

I was thinking about this and it’s possible to get both.   I love my job but it took years to get here.  I work remotely.  Don’t travel.  Get 4 weeks of vacation a year and if I loop them in with 3 day weekend holidays it gives me 5 at least.  I used to have pictures of all the bridges I’ve supplied piling for but it got to be too many so the end product is cool to me at least.   I did the Lewis and Clark viaduct over the Kansas River in KC.   Not sure it’s open yet because piling is so early in the process.

i know a few other guys that love their jobs too.  Some are in their late 60’s and don’t want to retire because they like it so much.

I used to love my job. That was when I felt that as a team we were working towards a goal to build our business. I enjoyed making the impossible - possible. Often that required 60+ hours per week. I've had projects that I have committed to that have required several weeks at 100+ hours per week. I have always felt that I worked for my clients and not my company. Figuring that if I keep them happy that additional work would come our way.

That has taken it's toll on me over the last 30 yrs. Over the last 5 yrs, I cannot get my staff on board with those thought processes and now I really want out of the grind. I don't have the energy to go back to putting in 60+ hours a week anymore, which I feel is needed to get the lab working efficiently.

Being a greeter at Bass Pro Shops is looking good to me even with the huge pay cut required.

Don't get me wrong.   I love my job but I'll retire the instant I can.😁  My wife and I talk about it all the time if not daily.  We're both 60 so we are getting very close.  If we could get health insurance we would retire today....  It's just too big of a risk without it.

Aren't you a principal or other admin position?  Those are normally better paid than classroom teacher.

I make more than a teacher as a systems/network admin, but I'm also a 12 month employee versus 9/10 month. I've been here 15 years now and have yet to crack the 50k mark, which most of you probably wouldn't roll out of bed for. My boss is considered an admin position and does pretty well though considering were in a small town. I only make 60% of what he makes though, which puts me well below the average when compared to other districts in the area. Either I stay here till he retires and hope I get his job or I wait for a position to open up at one of the bigger districts in the area and apply for those to move up. I'm OK with how things are now so I'm just biding my time until either of those come up.

So long as you're happy, that's all that really matters.
