snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 Can you live on $15-$20 per hour anyway? Better have pretty cheap housing if so. That's the big problem in our county is cheap housing. Mitch f 1

Maybe some in fast food joints, but the vast majority behind the counter at the quick shop or the grocery store, the restaurant workers, hotel workers, and just about any other service job are adults, often women. Here's the unpalatable truth...we have become a service economy. Without service jobs paying minimum wage or just a bit better, there wouldn't be anywhere close to enough jobs to employ all the adults that need and want work. And the service jobs keep shrinking with self-checkout and other forms of automation. So unfortunately, service jobs ARE going to have to be "careers" for many. It's one reason why the disparity between the rich and poor keeps getting bigger. The person who once was able to get a factory job paying a decent wage and benefits (thanks mainly to unions) is now having to take a job that pays minimum wage because the factory jobs ain't there anymore and they ain't coming back. How do we determine what part time occupations should be a living wage? Who determined minimum wage was to live on? Exactly. Everyone should have equal opportunity to make a decent wage. But instead of stressing equal opportunity they stress Equal outcome…which is robbing Peter to pay Paul. Leveling the playing field never works. MoCarp Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 Interesting take by some, capitalism is by far the superior economic way…how do I know? Venezuela isn’t experiencing an immigration catastrophe….for all you who do not know the USA is a republic….at the moment many manufacturers have chosen to produce goods and services in other countries…it will take legislation to change that. As long as politicians are in the pockets of people who have taken the bulk of manufacturing jobs it will not change…..our area has been Notoriously underpaid, that field is being leveled and will cost many small businesses who do not understand what is going on….want workers? Pay 3 bucks more than the next guy….you will get workers….big question is how much can you raise what you charge before you loose customers? tjm 1 MONKEYS? what monkeys?

But they don't have to raise the price at all. Just need to quit funding huge bonuses to upper management, quit catering to a board of directors and Wall Street. It can be done if we didn't always have to have record profits. I know this because I'm part of that management that gets the big bonus for record profits. I see the the stock grow. I know what my stores are paying in management fees. And I get a salary that is probably more than it should be. Plus a lot of other perks that pushes the cost of employing me way over what the folks that are actually making the sales earn. It's a screwed up system. Luckily I only have 2.5 years left of this and then I can go do something different. Greasy B, tjm, Devan S. and 1 other 3 1

What have you done to help? The problem is that only helps one group of people. I gave up a portion of my bonus to my group. I fight tooth and nail to give them raises. In the past two months I have promoted two people from 14-15 per hour to a nice salary with monthly bonuses and potential for annual bonuses. I work my butt off to make sure they get every penny they can. One of those is going from 14 an hour to making 65k this year. I do my best to get them as much as I can. By the way I have a couple of positions open in STL. They start around 14 but one of those is going to turn into a 60k opportunity for the person that does their job and proves they deserve a bigger role. tjm and fishinwrench 1 1

How do you then explain the cashier who has worked for 20 years a the regional grocery store chain whose wages have not kept pace with rising costs for housing, utilities, healthcare, food, and other standard cost of living indices? You've started your own business and set your own rates. That's awesome and the America Dream. Some people work for the man and it doesn't matter what they do, a 1-3% merit increase at Price Cutter's and Schnuck's of the world just doesn't get it done. No amount of boot-strap pulling changes that.
