For fair disclosure I have a Ram AFM and have 158K miles with no issues.  Knock on wood.  On the Ram tow/haul mode disables it.

Same on the Silverado.

If you buy one be dang sure you get some kind of warranty.  The 5.3 engine has a terrible track record unless you program away the AFM lifters, and the 6l80e transmission is trash. the 8l90e is better.

The fuel management quote is bunk unless you can share one credible source with defect rates.

zero issues with 5.3’s for me and at least 1 million  miles combined. Current 2018 is approaching 80k without a hiccup. None of my trucks have had any warranty work or repairs performed. Maybe I’m lucky.

I can't argue with you that's why I posted my experience so as to be fair.  And of course maybe the few problems get all the attention.  A bunch on youtube complain about it.  But if there's 20-30 on youtube that's certainly not very many relative to the number of engines out there with it.  But it sure got my attention but that was after I owned the truck.  Good topic though don't you think?

I agree.  Of all the Chevys I have owned I can’t remember any going in for more than general maintenance.  I’ve never owned a Dodge but have had 3 Fords one of which spent as much time in the dealership as it did at my house the first year. The good part of that was I got a free truck to drive those days.  I have a 2001 Chevy small v8 that is driven by all of the family an was driven by hired hands when we had them.  Brakes and an air conditioning compressor is all the extras it has had.

Grew up Ford until I bought a Bronco II in ‘85 and that was the last straw.  Have had great luck with Chevy since.  Drive a Ford company vehicle and while they have improved, meh.

That said, my wife goes her own way.  I spend more time wrenching on her little buggies(currently Honda, fingers crossed)than I ever did on a truck.

I have a few questions
Looking at possible going back to a Gas burner. Looking at used 2017 up. What should I know about these GMC Sierra's 1500's?
What kind of MPG do you get with one.?
I have not owned a Gas Burner since 1989. Always a Dodge Cummins, 2500 and 3500's. 1990, 1994, 1998, 2003, and now 2012 1/2. Just do not tow heavy like I use too.
All help appreciated
Thanks.

2018 Silverado crew. 5.3, 4x4. Low 20’s on the highway, mid teens towing a my boat on a tandem trailer. I use tow haul when towing.
Next truck will be a new version on this one which was a new version of the last one, and on and on.

I do wish the side of the seat was tougher (or me lighter, taller or step bars) to reduce wear and tear.

get the locking differential. You will be happy.

my mechanic buddy has a 5.3 with almost 300k on it. He says they are one of the most reliable engines out

That's what my Fishwagon ('99 Z78 stepside) has, and is currently at 276k.  That truck has spent it's entire life hooked up to boats (some rather heavy ones too).    It swallowed a 4l60E tranny at 225k and an alternator at 230ish.  Otherwise she's been a peach.  I wouldn't hesitate to hop in her and head to Yellowstone tomorrow.

Ford needs to learn how to build rear-end differentials.      Every Ford that pulls in here towing a boat starts slinging gravel on the passenger side. Even the 1 ton dually's.  Any other truck (Chevy, Toyota, Dodge) just crawls right in without ever slipping a tire.

You'd think that as long as Ford has been building trucks that they'd have a rear end that WORKED RIGHT.
