Except for the instances when they went down like a sack of potatoes right where they were shot. Which has been EVERY time with a .30 cal or bigger. A hit with a 12ga.slug will fold one up like a dead quail everytime. So you can't convince ME that size of projectile doesn't matter. "Tracking" is a bowhunting thing. If I'm gun hunting I don't wanna do any tracking ! Definitely gotta have tracking skills to bow hunt. If you drop one with the bow, you hit high and likely had to shoot again. It’s so satisfying to zip one with a bow and arrow and watch it tip over in sight though. nomolites and MOPanfisher 2

I love(d) archery and really miss it at times, but bowhunting just isn't for me anymore. When they stopped having 3D shoots around here I pretty much quit bowhunting. Then after the tornado ate all of my archery stuff I took the insurance payoff and just never replaced any of it. Guess you could say I got out clean. 🙂👍 I've never even shot a carbon shaft. It was still all Easton aluminum shafts and overdraws when I gave it up. nomolites 1
MOPanfisher Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 For whatever reason some carrridge/bullet combos seem to put deer down better. The old .30-30 with 150 grain flat point is a good example, most shots are fairly close, that big thin skinned slow moving bullet expands well and usually exits. .243 perfect shot is kapow no more lungs, deer generally runs 50 yards and piles up stone cold dead. But sometimes they just don't know they are dead. I have seen deer that I thought I must have missed that jumped a Fence and piled up, you just never know. Even a 10 second run can cover quite a bit of territory with a white tail. I like bullets to hit where I aim, expand, and exit. Physics will do the rest, if I do my part. Terrierman Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 I center punched a fairly nice buck in the center of his chest as he was walking straight towards me up out of a draw. I saw him coming and got ready to shoot while he was down in the draw and could not see me. When I shot him, he took off like greased lightning running to my left. I thought how on earth did I miss that deer? Jacked in another round, shot again and he dropped. The second shot was a lucky shot, hit him right in the neck. But the first shot killed him too. I hadn't missed, and the blood trail from where I'd hit him was huge. Looked like somebody had buckets of blood and was throwing it everywhere. Recovered the bullet from the chest shot just under the skin on the left hip. Only bullet I've ever recovered from a deer. Everything inside was a mess, totally destroyed. I was shooting a .270 Winchester, 130 grain Sierra Game King loaded at 3100 FPS. If I'd shot that deer with a .375 H&H I think I would have seen the same thing. JestersHK and Johnsfolly 2

I shot a deer with my .308 that was at the base of my 15 foot ladder stand. Bullet went through both lungs, but that deer ended up 60 to 70 yds away and had crossed a fence somehow. Similar to @Terrierman she wasn't hard to find since there was a 2 to 3 ft swath of blood to follow. Best that I could tell is the the energy of the bullet didn't fully dissipate in the deer since she wasn't more than 18 ft from me. JestersHK 1

Since crossbows were legalized and the fact you can buy one fully setup for quite a bit less than a compound, it's hard to justify to somebody to get a vertical bow if they just want to deer hunt. Several people I know that struggled to kill deer with a vertical bow have no problems with a crossbow since it's basically like using a gun anyways. Some of the elitists feel this isn't right, but I would rather see somebody make a clean kill on a deer than constantly cripple them for "sport". JestersHK, Johnsfolly and Terrierman 3
MOPanfisher Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Many years ago when I toted around a 7 Mag, I had 3 deer in some brush behind, a doe and two fawns, decided I wanted one of the fawns. Kaboom went the old 7 Mag whe I pulled it back out of the recoil deer were running everywhere, I hammer one of them, dropped it and headed to the house for the tractor. Picked it up and drove by where they were when I fired the first shot. And there laid the first one, stone cold dead. Good thing I had two tags. Terrierman 1
oneshot Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Kids laugh at me put a Scope on a 20Ga. Never have used it but have killed many Deer with 20Ga. Hunted with.22 single shot many years and learned to let the Bullet do its Job. Have to work on this with Deer. Although have killed many with a Bow. oneshot
nomolites Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 Good bullets make a big difference, they are not all created equal. The idea is to expend all of the energy from that round in the animal’s vitals for maximum effect…any animal hit in that fashion ain’t goin nowhere. A bullet that’s good for elk or bear is going to zip right through a whitetail, but it is better to use a good controlled expansion bullet in case you hit bone like a hip or shoulder where it will continue on rather than fragment. My 4 wheeler doesn’t care if I have to take it 20 yards farther to load up. Mike Terrierman 1
