Hawg Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 They’re so colorful in the creeks around my house. Nick Adams, Greasy B, MOPanfisher and 9 others 12
MOPanfisher Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Maan I used to love catching them big greenies out of the creeks. Would occasionally catch a natural hybrid bluegill/greenie also, delicious and fun to catch on fly rod or ultra light. And the occasional bass that would try to tie my little rod in knots just made it sweeter. Throw in an occasional punkinseed with their colors and it brings back a lot of good memories. DADAKOTA Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Greenies are an attack fish. They'll eat anything from a 1/2 ounce bass jig to a popping bug. For some reason I never here of folks keeping/eating them like bluegill or redears. How are they as table fare? Johnsfolly and Hawg 2
bfishn Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 They're delicious, can't tell them from 'gills or redear myself. That said, most of the greenies I've caught end up on a 6/0 hook, waiting to be exchanged for a much larger, and every bit as tasty flathead. Quillback, Johnsfolly, Greasy B and 2 others 5 I can't dance like I used to.
Nick Adams Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Those are awesome. Love catching those, too. Johnsfolly and Daryk Campbell Sr 2

We had a great pond at the facility I worked at in FL back in the 90's. My buddy didn't often change his lines out, especially after he just got to our facility. So he hooked up a giant green sunfish on a big bladed roostertail. The fish broke off. Less than a week later I caught the same fish on a 3 inch fluke. It still had the roostertail in it's gut with the blade in the fish's mouth. Not wanting to kill the fish outright we did not try to forcefully remove the roostertail. In hindsight probably should have kept that fish. I have never eaten a green sunfish. Not a fan of how they smell when caught and was not keen on keeping them. May have to give them a try. Lots of places they are becoming the dominate sunfish species. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
Greasy B Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Geenies go in the bucket with the Gills, taste great. Quillback Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 They are a neat little fish. If they grew to 10 lbs., I would be afraid to get in the water with them. Ferocious they are! bfishn, BilletHead and nomolites 3
