I'd give up FFS in a heart beat if I had to choose between it and SI. SI finds the cover and fish while FFS just helps me make the perfect presentation. I'm personally worthless with both, to be honest. FFS, for me, requires calm water and very little wind. Otherwise all of my attention has to be on keeping the target on the screen. SI distances and positions are wonky. I can set a waypoint and that SOB might be 50 yards off. It takes me too long to pinpoint stuff, so it's basically worthless in a tournament situation. I'm sure I could get better with more practice......but I don't have the motivation. I'm an old school 2D & Marker Bouy kinda guy. 🙄 DADAKOTA 1

I do run an external GPS mounted back near my transducer on my Humminbird SI unit at the console so that my waypoints are more accurate. Even if it were mounted at the console, you SHOULD only be off by about 10'. You'd just have to make sure you come towards the waypoint at the same angle that you marked it or else it will be off to the side instead of in front or behind the boat. Prior to owning FFS, I'd mark the brush on SI, turn around, switch to 2D, drive over brush and toss out the buoy as soon as it started to show on the graph.

There's an old fuel tank out on the flat that washed in from the old Ship's Marine back in the late '90s. I've been catching fish off of it for YEARS and know exactly where it is and how to set-up and throw at it. I can sidescan it and set a waypoint in the bassboat......and according to mapping it is off a good 20-25 yards. I can DI it in my Flyfishing boat and set a waypoint WHILE SITTING RIGHT ON TOP OF IT...... and once again WAY OFF. But I can tri-angulate that sucker like I've been doing for years.....and bounce a bait off of it on the 2nd or 3rd cast everytime.

I was taught by "Professionals" how to properly install, using a compass to ensure that nothing metal is nearby to negatively effect gps sensors when installing units, and all that other technical BS. Even fixed several other guys spotlock issues, post-install, by telling them to quit throwing pliers, scissors, and old jigheads next to their GPS puck. But yet my own personal units installations, BOTH OF THEM, are total pieces of $#!t. Go figure 🙄 snagged in outlet 3 1

Why not find it twice as fast and not have to play the guessing game.

I can bounce a lure off that old fuel tank without any sonar assistance at all. I didn't even find it initially by using sonar......Located it during a severe drawdown when the water was gin clear. The thought that my fishing success could be dependant on batteries and computer type technology sickens me. How long before "hunters" start killing deer from their couches via drone strikes....and having the body ubered to a processing plant, and the meat delivered to them ? The technology is available, WHY NOT USE IT ? NO, they'd rather wade through briar patches, climb trees with bows and firearms, drag it home and take a blood bath with it...... Because that's what "hunting" means. 😉

But I’d sure be interested in seeing what’s in some locations I regularly catch big fish. I’ve thought about getting SI but I figured I rip that transducer off every time I fish a smallie river.
